I was going to add what you quoted Furpo, optional dropline gear and Eaton's standard equipment..I heard somewhere that the first 3 124's have the machinery deck(winch) mounted 6 inches ahead on the car body(carrier) a lot more tippy..
As far as I know all the 124s have had Eaton slip clutchs in them. The older catelog with the GBA Logging machine lists them as Eatons. All the 120s had Witchitas as did the 123. Dont know why they used the different brands for the machines of the same era. The equal reversing was a Madill original option as well. 12440 has it as does 12446. Im not sure when they started to offer it.

I like the look of the new cab. Having the front window so you can look down at your tracks when walking will be handy. Interesting also that they have only speced the single band for the haulback brake. It would have been nice to see a bit more gaurding under the left front corner to stop the hydraulics getting hit by sticks etc.

Im sure they will have learned alot from building this machine and will learn even more when it goes to work. I am sure this is not the last lot of development that will come from Brightwater.

:( Oops........you are right Murk/Furpo re the Eatons. I think the reason for the switch from Wichita may have been due to the 'Cypress' influence - infact I have heard unconfirmed stories that the 124 carbody and drum set was mainly Cypress design and Madill in name only. Was never aware of the equal drum rotation option........is it a good thing overall considering cost and reliabilty.....perhaps a topic for debate. Anyhow, I'm going to look for a big hole to jump in. LOL

Nicholson is licensing the Aus/NZ machines to brightwater. I assume it is to cut down on machine cost. Don't know if they are giving brightwater any leeway for modifications or not.

I would only spec the equal drum rotation if I was to use the MSP most of the time. And then I would probably just buy a cheaper machine. Probably a 255. I really like the way you can adjust the pressure to the front main brake to get the carrage to lower to the drag. Great for down hill pulling.

Anyway back to real machines.... With the grapple the equal reversing doesnt have the same effect as the drums just dont counter rotate enough when opening and closing. The extra clutch and gear is just a whole lot of cost for no gain. As for reliability well it is just something else to go wrong. Also when the inside bag pops the outside clutch has to be removed. They are the smaller clutch as well. Same as the 120 clutches so down here they are a bit harder to get bits for.

I do hope though that everyone specs them. That way the 120 clutches parts will be cheaper and easier to get.

I find it strage the 120 has the Witchita and the 124 has the Eatons. Was the 120 designed under Madill or Cypress?

I believe this was the 1481, an 044 at WFP Gold River. Don't believe we have this machine anymore.

Sure looks like a big old horse, when you see you standing beside the tracks. Hope they find some place to put it back into service.

I agree with you Trakloader, it's sure a Madill 009 but it may also be a shopbuilt tower!

Greatwestcam - thank you for supplying serial - I'll add the pictures to my Madill database!

For anyone interested out there Keith Turner former S Madill service manager turned 105 yesterday. He seems to be still going strong with not much change from his last birthday. regards D.D.
