No, they have no epa or environmental regulations. Which is one reason everything is made there. American companies molding any kind of plastic or dealing with chemicals can have their products made there with no cost on recapturing and treating.
On the first trip to China we were riding along a newly constructed 4 lane divided concrete highway not far inland from Hong Kong. We passed one of many newly constructed factories along that highway seeing one that literally had orange smoke coming out an exhaust stack, traffic barrel orange. What they hell they were making and sending out the stack is anybody's guess.
While riding the bullet train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou we passed more than one creek crossing that was black as used motor oil that stained the banks of the creek at the last high water mark. Also passed several ponds with wooden structures built over the top. I asked our guide about the structures and he told us the wooden structures housed pigs over the pond where they raised tilapia underneath. You can make your own assumptions on that ecosystem.
Just my $.02 first hand, YMMV but I would advise against eating Chinese farm raised tilapia.
