    Travel time

I was wondering if any of you who have to travel to work get paid for travel time or compensated in some other way. The company I work for doesn't have a policy, as such, seems to be more of a hit or miss deal- ie., if it takes an entire day to get from the shop to the site they will pay you for...

Some more vids of the old D6

I got a little Contour HD camera recently and have been learning how to use it. More (and hopefully better) vids to follow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR5o1d9hoLs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVIqTLvBFM0

    Bucyrus Erie 325

This is (was?) sitting in the scrapyard the other day. I almost bought this machine years ago, it was sitting next to my 983 when I bought it.

    983 track adjuster fix

I have to replace the track adjuster seal on my Cat 983. Not a fun job- I did the opposite side a few years ago, it involves splitting the track and pulling the idler out. Not fun, and on this old machine it's going to entail the certainty of breaking off large grade 8 bolts and drilling and...

    Oshkosh tractor

Just got myself a nice old Oshkosh heavy haul tractor. It's not as bad as it looks- the guys who owned it started restoring it, did most of the hard stuff, and just never bolted it back together. All the pieces are there, including a monster Tulsa hydraulic winch. It's got a good running 335...

    Computer security settings question

I had some computer issues and had to do a restore. Now I can't sign in to some of the sites I have accounts with- ie Facebook and Snapfish. I got in here fine (obviously lol) and into my Yahoo and Ebay accounts. What do I have to change to get into snapfish and FB?

    Anyone headed to Haiti?

I heard on the radio today that there is widespread destruction in Haiti, along with maybe 200,000+ dead. Someone- their president or leader or chief witch doctor or whoever- was calling for heavy equipment to help clean up the disaster. I was wondering how such a thing would work- if it's a...

Homemade sprocket liners for my Allis Chalmers HD9

Not too many sources for AC undercarriage anymore, and I wouldn't want to put much $$$ into this old girl even if there were, so I decided to make some sprocket liners out of pipe. I know it's soft metal and won't last as long as a new sprocket or rim, but I don't put a lot of hours on this...

Old dozer pics from Rough and Tumble show

My dad took these at the Rough and Tumble threshermen's reunion this year. Myself and Gary Risk on the D7 3T and D6 9U respectively, later joined by Bill Glenn on his D2. I had a great time running that old 7, first pushing dirt over the hill to the steam shovel, and later pushing with the other...

    Building Dikes

Here are some pics of a contract I'm working on, building dikes for a dredge spoils disposal area. Pics are: 1) My machine, a D6R, next to an older D6H 2) The cut, we're taking 3 feet or so to get enough material 3) The push, this is about average distance if we're building it without help...

    Old D6 working

Spent the afternoon on the old D6 9U pushing this stump pile from the center of the field to the corner. Fifty plus years old and the old 6 still pushes good and is still a pleasure to run.

    strange little trencher

Here's a strange little trencher I picked up awhile back from a friend of mine. It was made by the Omsteel Machinery Company of Omaha, Nebraska, sometime in the '60's, apparently. Power is a 10hp Kohler which drives the digging chain with a system of belts and chains. The truly bizarre thing...

    Pipeline corrosion protection job

A month or so back I was on a job up in PA putting in 11000 ft of anode for corrosion control on a gas pipeline. I was on a 650J Deere backfilling and plowing snow ahead of the crew when necessary. The excavator operator started out with a 75 Deere which worked well in the swamps but switched...

First time out on the "new" grader

I finally had a chance to try out my '53 Cat 212 I picked up a few months ago. Seems like a nice old machine, runs good and everything seems to work as it should. First time ever on a grader- I like it! A couple pics of the old girl and a shot of the road I "graded". LOL

    HD 41's

A couple of weeks ago we were driving back to the hotel from a safety class we had to take for the pipeline job we were doing (installing corrosion protection on a gas line) I spotted out of the corner of my eye what looked to be a pair of HD41's. A return trip later yielded 5 HD41's, an HD31...
