Some of PacificEd,s pics of 1965 Hayes HDX model sn#5032738 with Madill 009 spar. Owner Van West Pole. From new truck went to MacMillan Bloedel's Sproat Lake Division as unit H-11. I was told this summer truck is still parked somewhere in the bush.

What was the standard wheel base of a HDX-1000? Were they different between a conventional and self loading types?

I am pretty sure "HDX" knows standard wheelbase. Most HDX I have seen had 225" wheelbase but I have seen advertisement for HDX with 224" and 230". In brochure for HDX it says wheelbase is optional. I have posted a few pics. Malispina truck has a longer wheelbase compare to Dave Mills and old Coulssons truck. The Van West HDX spar truck looks like it got a longer wb and frame when converted to spar truck.

Here are 2 pics I got from HDX yesterday. Pics were shot last week at Sarita. It is Dave Mills truck #7 a HDX from 1975. It was M&B unit H34. The last conventional built and went to the QCIs when new. 3 weeks later H17 preloader came off the assy line and the doors were closed forever.:(
Trackloader you must be happy to see her still going strong:)
Thanks HDX.

Thanks for those scans of old Hayes ads. It reminds of back when everything was ALL RIGHT in B.C., before Weyerhaeuser and Gord Campbell took the wrecking tools to the forest industry and loggers had to become miners and oilmen to survive.

Re. Clipper ad. Here are some pictures of old "Lipper" waiting to be restored. Clipper model was introduced 1953. Compare to other truck makers cab at that time the Clipper cab was very wide - 78". Most cabs were 60" to 72" wide.

Hayesno1 That old "Lipper" was bought new by Tri-West Transport and when traded in was bought by M&B and went to their Nanaimo River Division and was numbered H54 and when her hauling days were done she along with some of her sister trucks had big water tanks put on them and they became FireTankers That is why you can still see her Fire Tanker # on the drivers door F147 As you know when they hauled logs they had an "H" for Hauling Department and when they were transfered to the Fire Dept they were given new #s with an F for fire dept. It was all an accounting thing for the books I know she looks to be in awful condition but with a little work she could be made to look very nice. After all she still runs and we drive her around --not very far but she still goes to the McLeans Mill Show every year under her own steam so she still has heart!!!

Some of the trucks were transferred to the "jarding" dept. and got "J" numbers, too. :tong Never could figure that one out. Same as drills with their "N" numbers.

Here is another Hayes that got a second life as water/fire truck. It's an old 1959 HDX #sn: 9031973. Water box is droped over bunk box. Look at right door, it has square window corners - properly original door compare to left door - newer style as that got rounded window corners at front. First 4 pics were shot summer 2005 North of Campbell River. Last picture with tank removed was shot this summer.

Hayesno1 That old girl is almost back home. We both know where she is now and she went to Lake Cowichan new to Alfred Nelson in April /59 was hauling for Hillcrest Lumber Company. GM 6110 engine with 46-40 rears 5&4 trans was Pasture Yellow. That is another strange color Guess when mixing the paint if it came out a different shade they renamed it. Lots of Petrol Yellow in the 40s and School Bus Yellow in the 50s and in the 60s it became Apache Yellow This was almost the perfect Yellow for Logging Trucks

One of my earliest memmories of the Port Alberni area was the loaded HDX's that ran near my childhood home out near Sproat Lake - back in the '60s. This was before the changeover that M & B did to the Red & White. I remember the trucks being overall yellow with the dark green hood. The trucks might still have had the MacMillan Bloedel and Powell River Company logo still on the doors.
