Jackd Was talking to Alec Spencer the other day speaking of old drivers from Sproat. See Alvin Roth from time to time As with all oldtimmers --their ranks are getting thinned out But the Trucks of yesterday still linger in our memories dont they--PM me and I will put you onto some good pics of the very trucks you speak of OK

HDX; thanks for great info/history as allways. By the way was "Lipper" a 4x2 or 6x4 when new?

She was a 6X4 with a 200 cummins and a 5&3 trans with 4600 rear ends. This was almost the end of the 4600s and the new 46-40s were coming on strong. Reason M&B bought it was because of the components Same as their HD Hayes's at Nanaimo River Division. They had a wreck with an old KW and needed a truck to replace it and the "Lipper" had just been traded in at Curley Browns at Cassidy so M&B bought her These NR trucks had 11:00X22 rubber and 10 foot logging bunks on them because they were hauling to the Nanaimo River reload where the loads of logs were lifted off the trucks and put on skeleton cars (logging train) All these HD Hayes's there had Rolls Royce 6 cyl engines

Dont know if you guys know it or not but Brad Hatton over at Coast PowerTrain in New West (Vancouver) just got an order of Hayes Mudflaps 24X30 with HAYES and the bear and the smaller ones with just the bear 14X20. The 24X30 are 1/2 inch thick like the original Hayes Flaps back when Firestone made them in 1970. The later ones 1972 and newer were very light and had a habit of flopping around whereas the originals were anti sail

HDX; re mudflaps I found this old HDX truck - I am pretty sure you know her very well. I have not seen her since 2005. But what I found very interesting is the right mudflap - this must be an old original mudflap

Pics of off highway HD Hayes sn#4050. It was shortly owned by Jim Falconer and then sold. In background of 1st pic you can see another HD. Jim owned that as well. I took pics in Holberg, summer 2005. Present owner is John Foster, Port McNeill. The fenders have been modified on both trucks. Front tires are massive 14x25.

Some close up pics of Hayes "H17" preload system - you can see the half moon shaped piece which lifts the trailer loaded or empty and on each side of frame rails you can see the side rams which take over to lift the 5th wheel assy. up.

Thanks again for the details guys.

Looks like this guy needs to have some work done. I see a broken slack adjuster. I don't think I would want to come down those hills missing any braking ability.

JDOFMEMI Where exactly is the "broken slack sdjuster??? Funny I have driven this truck for too long and never noticed it and yet you scope out a photo and see it WOW Please point this flaw out!!!! We set our own brakes up on these trucks so we are responsible for them. Please tell me what is wrong with the offending brake and which one it is OK

JDOFMEMI Is it the slack adjuster on the front axle that is very visable??? I think that what is throwing you off is the grease between the slack adjuster and the cam shaft. As you know there is 5 grease fittings on evey brake on these trailers-One on the slack adjuster itself and one on the cam shaft bracket right beside it and one inside the drum beside the "S" the works the brake shoes and one on each anchor pin. As well as setting up our own brakes we also grease the truck and trailer ourselves. As it works out every day you grease but not the entire truck so it works out that the truck gets greased every week. Some things like brakes and steering and driveshafts will get greased more often than say stake hinge pins or hydralic ram tailholds and other little use points. Hope this helps
