I crossed the 60 line some time back, somewhat retired from mechanic over 23 years ago to become a power station worker then retired from that I thought for good. Am back driving as a Semi Retired grain and fertilizer hauler part time, too damned old for full time but got bored. Owner said he cannot find anyone worth hiring or willing to work part time worth their salt then I show up. All busted up, patched up, but pass the physicals and drugs testing, have been able to and been an average operator since 1976, owned my own in 80/81 while have millions of miles to my name overall. Pretty sad when a whining whimpering somewhat adult sets on his or her ass supposedly DYING to get a decent paying decent hours job but unwilling to put the IPhone or drugs or the rest of the game playing crap down to get it. Can't help with finding anyone, help wanted signs are literally EVERY where.

Well let's see if this season is any better for help. I just posted adds on line looking to hire 1 good guy. Last year was a total flop for me through the the off season I get by using who ever I can land that will work a day here or a day there (my accountant hates this) make her have lots of w-2 to file for very little pay. But through the busy season I can't seem to land quality help .

Ya, I try to do it all on the up and up. I'm sure I still make mistakes tho. It's thought the winter months I've got several guys I use as they are off from there real jobs. Through the summer I employee 1 or 2 guys 40 to 60 hours per week so I don't mind having the bean counter keep track of that and she insisted I do my winter hires the same way. Probably best in the long run just wish I could hire my winter guys in the summer but the grass is greener for them where they are at so I can't complain about that.

Didn't know the unemployment office offered such a service. I appreciate the tip as I'm looking for 1 or possibly 2 guys to come on full time in the next couple weeks I'll have to give them a call in the morning.

As I suspect you live or are near Rural(KS) I would also recommend looking at the 'Want' board at the local Farm Suppliers, people have a tendency to hang ads there as to wanting work and most are diligent just not the sharpest tool in the shed where they would know to post elsewhere.

I'm not so sure that the reason the mechanic surge is on is because of "expansion"..
ALOT of mechanics are bailing.. the shops have increased shop rates & not mechanic rates.. & they're fed up.
So ANY "experienced mechanic" will go into an interview with THAT in mind.. regardless of what the interviewer says..
I always like to talk to the "floor" folks.. not the "chair" crowd..
My old boss walked a fella thru the shop.. introduced me to him.. he said I'v been there 20 years..
I looked at the kid & say.. DUDE, if McDonalds is hiring.. GO THERE.. seriously..
THAT was the last time I was introduced to an interviewee.. Lol

my personall problem and reason for wanting to bail is they ask to much im doing managments work not all of it but some of it , i yelled at boss yesterday he had come into the shop before t got there and told my helper who is also the swing equipment operator and is new he wanted to do this this an this ect... i went up to his office and told him how the hell you expect me to do all that i have 3 things torn apart in the shop now , services to do and a 40 ton hual truck i been triing to make a parts list for for 2 weeks .i also reminded him i asked for help over a year ago and a couple times since then .at this point its to little to late he is a company guy he is nice but he just dont get what it takes I was attempying to take care of over 35 units by myself some of which is no biggy like the little stuff 3 inch pumps generators light plants they get touched twice a year typically for a pm but when you add in big stuff with the litte stuff well stress is what happens. when i go for an interview i make them show me how there stuff works paperwork , workflow , parts aqusition ect and i do typically try and talk to the guys actually working if not i watch them while im going thru the shops to see if they seem happy. rant over lol i think i have myself fully convinced to move on now ,,,

That's why they called us journeyman back in the day. Moving from job to job is also how we got experienced in the trade.

back in my 20's, the longest I ever stayed was 3 years..
I got the experience I needed & moved on.. 99% of the time it was for more pay..
$ ran the world & my life..
I settled in Charleston for the weather & the advancement opportunities.. BUT.. the work was piled on, I was THE GO TO guy but the pay never kept up w/ the work load..
I work my butt off while some were promoted & others were stealing.. ALL with the full knowledge of the big boss..
Time to go..
