Great pictures! looks like the Wagner might have grunted a bit on those loads. We had 980 b s were i worked and had to pushoff .What a contrast to todays logging even if the 1990s seem like yesterday.

I don't think that Stacker could unload an off highway logging truck with one "bite" , It usually took two or three "Bites"

Dave Whiskin Collection Fletcher Challenge Caycuse Div. 1st picture #6-249 & #6-246 HDX Hayes Trucks Dave Whiskin standing 2nd picture #6-249 & #6-246 HDX Hayes Walter Cooke standng . 3rd picture #16-24 Cypress Hydraulic Log Loader Richard Zboyoski operator . Richard was a very interesting fellow . He was raised in Caycuse went to work at a young age , when he retired (which was mandatory at 65 , at the time) at 65 , he worked into his 65th year long enough to leave with 50 years seniority . He had a very dry sense of humor , one time the dispatcher asked him late in the day if he had a late load for me . Richard responded with , sure , but tell him to bring his blankets , in other words I'll start loading him , but the truck will stay over night . scan158.jpg scan159.jpg scan160.jpg

Dave Whiskin Collection Fletcher Challenge Caycuse Div. 1990 Woods Foreman Bob Norcross on the "Ground" Richard Zboyoshi Operator on #56-32 Cypress 1825 Hydraulic log loader unloading it off Lowbed . Note number on loader is #54-85 when Fletcher Challenge took over British Columbia Forest Products it had previously taken over CZ . As a result the machine numbers were changed on BCFP machines to correspond with the CZ system . The first #56 was for "Line Loaders" so #54-85 was the wrong number on this machine , it was changed to #56-32 . The number #54-85 was issued to a Madill Super Snorkel . scan161.jpg scan162.jpg scan163.jpg scan164.jpg

Where i worked a cat like that would cleanup small patches of right of way or blowdown . Sometimes yarding special wood for a bridge or or maybe a new snorkel for the loader. No holds barred in those days ,get wood however you could.

Up until the late 1940's early 1950's most Logging rail grade and road grade were built by "Cable Grade Shovels" , as the "Bulldozer" was developed , it became more popular for use in building Logging road grade . By the mid 1950's Cats were the preferred machine for building Logging road grade . By the early 1960's Cable Grade Shovels were fazed out . This statement refers to the Port Renfrew area I grew up in . There is terrain on the West Coast of British Columbia that Grade Shovels out perform Cats , I know of Grade Shovels building Logging roads up until the late 1970's . As the Hydraulic Excavator was prefected , it replaced both Cats and Grade Shovels for building logging roads . The "Arch built on the back of the Cat showed up in the late 1950's or early 1960's , it was great for "Cat Logging" or for pulling logs off the right away before the Grade was built . The Cat in the picture was probably kept around to spread ballast on new Logging roads or to do chores like cleaning debris off roads and landings .
