Here is what was common when I started doing engines with liners. I haven't rebuilt a motor now in around 10 years. I could put the bar on the top of the liners and check to the block or go from the block to the liners. I don't recall what I paid, but there wasn't much money around to spare so it wasn't much compared to what could have been spent.

Here is a side project from my father in law. He passed away a few years ago and the brother in law was cleaning out the barn. There were several of these hanging on the wall and he didn't want to throw any away so he gave me two of them. This one had broken handles so I removed those and clean the steel up, then primed and painted it. I got one handle from Crosscut Saw and had to make a new vertical handle. When the weather warms and dries out some I'll put some kind of finish on the wood. I'll probably mount it over the door of the shop when done.

I mentioned I have an experienced come-a-long. It used to have safety latches and they didn't touch the small end of the hooks anymore. It put on a lot of dozer tracks and leveled out plenty of engines and transmissions in its days. I bought it used back when there was a Boeing surplus. We called these things coffing hoists back then.

The shop at the quarry had one just like that along with some other Central brand measuring tools, seemed to be good quality and as I recall the price was pretty good compared some of the major brands.

My older brother got the old family crosscuts from the Greenville Farm. One two man and a one man for use with a Buck for firewood. I agree the Wide tooth saw is an Ice Saw. STL had a Ice House for winter harvest of river ice, the museum for that piece of history had saws as that, some over six feet long.

Hey, JohnC--i've got a comealong identical to yours. Mine was made by JET. 3/4 ton rating. I bought it new about 40 years ago. Its been well used over the years. I had to take the brake apart once when it jammed on. I am pretty sure i had exceeded the rating limit:eek::rolleyes::)

Get yourself one of the little 1/4 ton baby come alongs they are about a hundred bucks for a good one let me tell you you will never find a better helper in tight places.

I've wanted to replace the hooks for years and never found anything even similar. Anyone got a suggestion?
