The 400 series were fairly reliable machines, with limited electronics, only pilot or mechanical controls. The only computer is the ICU, which basically only counts hours and releases the park brake.

Try to get the mechanical controls, as the pilot controls tend to stick in the cold weather.

Stinky exhaust smoke is normal, just have the timing advanced (they run better advanced above spec.)

Is there a spec for this? Would like to have my 440$3 tuned.

You have a 440 series 3 with stinky exhaust?

Tier 3 engines had the timing retarded to decrease nox levels, but this increased soot, and made for stinky exhaust, as compared to a tier 2 engine.

The injection pump timing specification for the 4.5L NEF Tier 3 engine is 0.70 +/- 0.05 mm (0.027 +/- 0.002 inch).
Tier 2 engine pump pre-lift is 1.10 to 1.20mm for naturally aspirated engines, and 0.95 to 1.05 mm for turbo-charged engines.
Timing the engine is very similar to the Dodge pump timing, go to 4:30. You may have to pull the gear off of the injection pump, to adjust your timing.

If you have the pump gear off, when installing the gear tighten the fuel pump gear nut 10-15 ft/lbs, unlock the fuel pump locking bolt, then tighten the fuel pump gear nut to 77 ft/lbs

For a tier 3 engine, advance the timing to at least 0.95 to reduce engine smoke and stinky exhaust.

Now of course this would only be allowed in a non regulated emissions country :)
