    Should I rent or buy?

I forgot to mention earlier in my earlier post that I did try to rent a mid-sized hoe (320'ish size) from the local Cat rental place when I first started clearing our land. Before I could rent, I had to show proof of insurance ($1M+ or such), take some Cat Operator Class to be "certified", and...

    Should I rent or buy?

I agree with Mcrafty1 that you need an experienced local contractor, even a couple is better, to give you a reasonable quote so you know your true baseline costs. Almost, not always, but almost always it's cheaper to hire an expert when you factor in everything of time, maintenance, repairs...

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

Makes perfect sense.... and so obvious after you said it. Thanks for keeping it simple.

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

Thanks for the tips. I'm guessing trying to measure clearances with feelers or plastigage is kinda useless when rolling in bearings. I've only seen clearances being measured when block was upside down and the crank was resting on the block and not the caps. I assume the best thing to do is...

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

Nicky- I'm guessing your suggesting this because if the seals leak on the hydraulic and tranny pumps, then those oils leak into the engine crank case?

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

The only recent one that pops into mind is Busch. Is that the one? That's an amazing view to have from the house. Usually when I'm up in JBLM you can't see Rainier that clearly from base but that day it was beautifully clear. Took that pic with my iphone just standing next to the airfield...

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

Old Growth- You're spot on. I have a bit of experience purchasing military surplus and I know you can get a gem almost as much as you get junk at these auctions. Being patient at these auctions is a virtue to not get bent. The dozer I picked up was original in the early 70's but went through...

Can someone help identify which fuel transfer pump I need for my cat 215b? Attached as a photo of the engine serial number.

That is flat out nuts! I can't find that old post but who knows where I saw it. Great way to end a Friday...laughing out loud. Thanks!

Can someone help identify which fuel transfer pump I need for my cat 215b? Attached as a photo of the engine serial number.

Interesting. Have you tried taking the cap off the fuel tank when running? Disconnected line to transfer pump (or whatever is the lowest part of the fuel line) and verified fuel flows freely from gravity? Fished around the fuel tank with a coat hanger to see if there is a plastic bag or set of...

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

Exactly. That's what worries me. If I owned her for the last couple hundred hours and was confident the fuel leak just started to happen in the last hour or two, then yes- I'd just replace the transfer pump, change the oil and run her hard. But no, she was delivered fresh from the Army where...

Can someone help identify which fuel transfer pump I need for my cat 215b? Attached as a photo of the engine serial number.

What is the reason for believing your transfer pump went out? Fuel delivery? Or fuel in crankcase? Or something else?

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

Thanks, TCTractors- I appreciate the input and confidence on keeping this simple. Here is what I found in my Army manuals for replacing bearings in a D7G which should be the same 3306 in my upgraded D7F. Granted these procedures are for an engine removed and completely broken down in clean shop...

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

Thanks, Dave. I'm setting up an account with CTP as I have a feeling I'll be using them more in the future. Oz- Thanks for the input on the inframes. I figured that was the case but the Cat mechanic made it sound otherwise. Once I get the belly pans off, I'm sure I'll be able to get to...

    Swamped Dozer

I agree that I would not use boiled oil as the final oil and I even said to use fresh oil as the final fill. I'm only offering to use the boiled oil as a way to flush the system and be able to remove water. I would not run the boiled oil very long in the tranny, only long enough for it to...

Cat D7F 3306 making engine oil (suspect fuel from transfer pump)

I've been working hard to bite the bullet and embrace reality that replacing the main and rod bearings is the right (and only) thing to do. I don't have easy access to a shop so this may be a field fix. Called the local Cat dealer to see if they were interested and they said they are shying...

    Swamped Dozer

I didn't see this offered but what about cooking (boiling) the water out of the drained oil in a large pot and reusing it just to get out all the water out. Last oil change would be new oil. Would save a lot of oil purchasing and disposing if you could boil out the water. May be too late here...

    Cat D7F Feedback/Advise

All my deployments were in countries that began with vowels. But since I was aviation, I was in the air most of the time and avoided the convoys...always felt sorry for the guys driving trucks on those long convoys. We would sometimes see them stretched over the horizon (we were only flying...

    Another Drott 40 Track issue

Sorry to hear about the machine shop. I'm sure it was gut wrenching knowing all the tools where in there during the fire. I grew up in a machine shop too. Pop was a tool and diemaker for the Air Force and when he retired, we opened up a small shop (3,500 sqft) to keep him busy. Not one...

    Another Drott 40 Track issue

Yeah, that'll hold and then some. Obviously you have some knowledge of machining with the shrink fit tolerances so glad to know your repair is top notch. I've seen too many folks use slip-fit tolerances on keyed straight bores and then wonder why their keys shear down the road. Any movement...

    Cat D7F Feedback/Advise

Aww hell, you're already an expert on TM's. I started out as an avionics repairman (helicopter navigation radios) back when radios were mostly discrete components. Nowadays, way too many chips and circuit boards for me to follow. And it seems like you already know about heavy wrenching in a...
