So I found this old Cat D6 or D7 for a really good deal, got it home and it did fine for couple of hours . Then the engine started making a knocking noise. I tried to tell where the noise was coming but could not tell exactly, so I kept running it and the noise only got worse. So, since I was a good ways from the house, i decided get on back, but about half way it belched some black smoke and stalled out and won't turn over anymore. My buddy says it is probably the starter since it work turn over. Wooo... Cat wants a lot for that starter. Think I might change the engine oil at the same time to see if that helps.

First things first! Have you tried using a new key? Could be the old key is getting weak and can't push the volts fast enough to work the starter.

Well I'm kind of working on a project! Trying to repair a 1957 SunBeam MixMaster Model 12. Anyone know of a good but cheap source of parts.

Seems it has two problems, main one being the speed controller has a broken spring arm that the contacts points are mounted to. Second thing is it appears to have a bad capacitor. Had a lead on a good used speed controller for $10.00 plus shipping so I emailed the guy and asked if he had any good capacitors. That was over a week ago!

Did locate another guy who had the speed controller but he is asking $24.95 plus shipping. And to add to it he said he was starting chemo last Monday so no telling if or when I can hear from him again.

And don't anyone mention this to my wife she would start the paperwork to have me committed. She thinks I should just buy a new one! Especially as I have one that is working good right now!

One thing I can guarantee is in the year 2081 there will not be anyone looking for parts to fix a 2019 Sunbeam Mixer! Be lucky if you can buy parts for one next year!
Maybe you can cannibalize this one, https://www.ebay.com/p/1122359584?iid=303258346340&rt=nc

My car did something like that one time. Made a bunch of noise then quit.
Wait, no wasnt the car.
Hmmm, must have been the truck.
Yeah it was the truck only it started up again, and it didn't smoke and it didn't make any noise.
But I did change the engine oil.
And I once stayed at a Holiday Inn Express...

Maybe you should go on a holiday?

You need a carburetor off of a Tesla truck to reroute excess battery output to the Whittle engine which, when properly coupled to the drivetrain of a Allis Chalmers fuel cell tractor will produce enough filtered water to meet the minimum flow requirements of a Fukushima approved “continuous use” decontamination shower used every half hour by the Nuclear Energy Commission sanctioned monitor who will keep careful watch on the excess plutonium inside said battery.

The 88mph thresh hold is commonly mistaken as minimum speed needed to sustain time travel. This is not in fact the case. The 88mph target is the minimum speed needed to gather enough forward potential energy to remain in motion while carrying the several thousand tons of lead shielding in addition to working arrangement of your device.

The unubtanium Supply has currently been bought out by Air America to power a prototype vehicle capable of carrying a payload large enough to bring contraband back from their hotels on the moon to account for the black budget of the US.

....sorry, I cannot help with the metric conversions....

Metric is easy.
100C is where water boils. Make tea or boil potatoes
0C is where water Freezes, make ice cubes for Gin and Tonics
-40 is the same as -40.
Add a wind and this is the temperature where all life stops.
(Forget that 0 degrees K, that is just a conspiracy theory)

I found a starter on line , finally got it on . Changed the engine oil and filter. Got a wick filter and some 0-20 oil. Engine still won't turn. So I'm at a lose, what to do next? I did notice a lot if oil leakage in the belly pan also I found a chunk of metal in the there that must have been from the previous owner. Any advise?

Must be the battery.
Go to your local junk yard and see if they have any used batteries from a Geo Metro.
I had a Geo Metro, it would always start.

Have you tried repainting it yet? That almost always fixes everything depending on the brand of paint.

There was possibly too much carbon on top of the pistons and the engine stopped at top dead center and two of the pistons are locked in that position because of the carbon build up, try five
gallons of marvel mystery oil in the crank case. Seen this happen on a cruise ship I was on last year.
Normally it's caused by running too wide of a ring gap on those two cylinders.

LOL......all of you are off your rockers!

Well I didn't finish with the helpful hints-On that cruise ship the entertainment manager came up with the idea to break the engine free. The captain ran a real long rope around the propeller shaft
and down both sides of the ship and had the guests yank back and forth until it broke free, then he had the ones on port side run with it and pull started it off the propeller shaft. ;)
