Murk, how does the travel retarder work on the 044/144, from an operators' point of view. Like can you go down any steep hill without a snub? I've been told you pull the retarder on and just power your way down. True?

Yep that's it in a nutt shell....they have band brakes on the final drives so the idea of the retarder is to keep the bands from over heating and failure, same idea as Trucks..couple of pics for ya. can't see the bands though.
Update for 88018 Cleah Creek 143 this GY was hit by thieves who stole parts off the engine and trans. which allowed water in, froze up over the winter and that was the end of it. Cut up for scrap last owner was Roga ??S5001710.JPG

The retarder on 044/144s works by applying the both swing clutches on at the same time. This slows down the gears and gives you your retard action. You must have the swing brake on ,and the amount of retard you get is determined by how much air you apply. They are water cooled so you must watch your you wichita water temp so you do not cook them.

I just read Torkel's article about the Ritchie Bros auction. It says two of the Cortloch 124's went to New Zealand. Does anyone know the #of the other one that took a boat ride? I thought I remember hearing that Island Timberlands sold one to someone in NZ too?

I suspect it was 12442. I remember Duncan Brown telling me that when he brought 12440 in Doug Kinny brought 12442 in.

At the time Duncan brought his 124 which has changed hands two times / Doug Kenny now Ken and Gareth White a logger by the name Winston Allnut brought one at the same auction. Winston is not with us any more however he was a well respected logger in the Nelson NZ area.

I'd like to update the list as much as possible, hopefully all you guys can help. So many of these machines have changed hands, many to New Zealand. I think #23 went to NZ not too long ago. #18 is now with Northview timber, its painted dark green and there's a video of it on Youtube.

A couple of Madill yarders spotted during a recent tour around Nakusp. Madill 122, originally owned by Schiller Contracting - I believe this may be 122/123 hybrid with the drumset and boom from a 123.

124-40 is our machine Bay Yarding Ltd, Rotorua NZ
124-23 is now owned by JD Contracting, Opotiki NZ
124-50 but actually the 49th machine GYS Gisbourne NZ

Furpo could probably give danny arbuckles current and old 124 serial numbers I'm pretty sure one of them is 124-25?

And of course the serial numbers are growing again with a couple of new 124s already working down here and more sold and being built at the moment.

Your machine is 124-51 isnt it ali?

OK I wasnt right with 12442. Asumption is the mother of all f ups.

The Winston Allnut machine was 12439. This was for sale in the March 09 NZ Logger. Roadswitcher did find out who brought it but I can not remember at this point. I have a photo of it somewhere. It has the riser under the cab.

The old Arbuckle machine is 12422. It is currently in the north Waikato with Ribbonwoods. I posted a photo of it earlier.

12446 is owned by Sam Olsen and is ex John Ray.

There are a few more that I know of that I have not seen so dont have the numbers

Oliver Logging
Newton Logging
Arbuckles (Steve Rist's machine)
John Burt
Mitchell's
ANC (Australia) Think this is either 47 or 48

I am unsure of which serial numbers but Dorman timber has 3 or 4 120's and I know 120-10 is now owned by Black Mount logging out of Squamish and also the Ainsworth machine sold to A logger in Princeton Bc.

A bit more info to add to the 120 database....

120-11 - sold in 2011 to maybe to Vancouver Island?
120-27 - now owned by Stamer Logging
120-29, 120-12 or 120-06 is or was for sale.... I'm pretty sure DR Moore only has 2 now and maybe soon 1.

You guys are awesome, great work with the SNs. It amazes me how much iron NZ is soaking up!

Sleddr, I think the last few 122s were setup like that. Schiller's 122 is #47, the last one built according to the list. I've seen picures of Cougar Inlet's 122 #44 and it looks like the exact same setup. They must have made updates to the 122s at some point?
