I don't know if you intend them to or not, but your posts seem to be very sarcastic. You are clearly a very knowlegable person and have a lot to add to the forum, just relax on the sarcasm :drinkup

One thing to look at with Kaufman is there trailers total GVW is just shortly over 40K, so it doesnt leave you enough for a 20 ton payload, I think they only top out at 17.5 ton payload or so. It was said somewhere on the forum before, but make sure you specify that you want dexter axles with the Kaufman too.

Craft has lots of valuable info to share with the forum and yes it seems to come across as slightly insulting, im sure he doesn't intend it to be.

i struggle with the one axle over weight issue but im open to learning something new, the weight that a 20t needs to carry on the hitch to be legal is substantial and can lighten the front axle of the truck on some applications which not exactly good, its also hard not to expect the front trailer axle to have more weight then the rear axle when loaded this way even with equalizer suspension , so if that front axle is right at the max gvw ( which a 20t will be) you could be over, but without a scale for each axle its hard to tell, one thing you can expect is the dot/state officer to have a scale and to explain why a 25t trailer is required . lol

I think we're all over analyzing here.Stumpjumper doesn't even have his excavator yet so a lot of this is conjecture at this point.I will say though that a 20 ton trailer is about the limit for a 33K to 35K lb. single axle dump both in legalese and practicality, meaning I wouldn't want to be behind him if I had a hot date to pick up.:D

Very true tuney,

thats the real issue, a safe way to move equipment. if stump jumper is renting im sure sometimes a 130 isnt available but the 160 will be ready to go , that in itself would push me to the third axle on a tag , it always seems to be just slightly larger then just abit smaller when we rent stuff at least it seem like that here.

the other small but note worthy issue is any implements like hammer/grapple, this will surely put him overweight, thirdly the single axle on his truck might be over as well with the 20t .

i did the numbers for along time and really moved slowly when it was time to upgrade from my 12t and it just seemed the 20t wasn't even close to the best option for a heavy tag , maybe a 22t but as i suggested just go to the 25t and be done with it, they really pull much better and the third axle will stop and i mean stop not slow down.

either way its his choice and im sure whatever he decides it will do the job as many run loaded to the gills to get the $$.

I agree with you on upsizing trailers completley. It is way better to have a trailer rated to carry a bigger load than you normally haul. If for anything it is much easier on the trailer itself, tires especially etc. Stumpjumper you will regret an undersized trailer in the long run. I have done the very same thing and regretted it afterward. Now we buy everything in oversize mode- used or new. Just my 2-cents

I used to have an Overbuilt 25 ton tandem axle tag behind a tandem dump truck. I pulled a 160 sized machine. It sucked, alot more tongue weight than I liked, positioning was critical. I know many go this route, but I didn't like it. I bought the triple axle 25 ton and its a much better towing experience, and I have another axle to spread the weight and a longer trailer. I pull that with a tandem with a drop axle. Our bridge laws are tight here, you could not pull a 160 with a single axle truck. I wouldnt even if it were legal. The 5/2 tranny with such a small motor would be a bad combo here. Reminds me of the saying "A lot can always do a little, but a little can never do a lot."

the more I look at it, the more I like a 35 ton detachable and a road tractor, lower the tags and keep the single axle as well.

if you can swing the extra insurance, the tax and tags it is the best way to move heavy iron and you can haul other stuff, as well as a trailer dump

For years we ran our interstate 40dla to tow everything from a 160 to a jd310se. Worked well and did the job but is still no comparison to our tracktor and lowboy.

it will cost about the same to get a new tag as it will a used lowboy and truck. I will probably stay pa only with the plates making it a little cheaper, hauling for hire should both add biz, and pay for the plates & ins at the very least. It gets me away from a barley legal rig weight wise, and also lets me move up to a larger excavator with less competition, for the same $$. Oh, and saves $500 min. of adding air to the rear of the dump.

Fair question I would like to know also as I have the same machine and a friend of mine hauls it for me from time to time and I always wondered if it was legal.

I'm not sure about NY bridge gap laws or seasonal restrictions but you should be fine as far as the weight. You should be able to get most of the weight on the trailer. The PC 120 should be around 12 metric tons (depending on how it's equiped) so you will be way under the payload of the trailer. Assuming your trailer deck is long enough you should be able to position the 120 so that just enough weight is on the tongue to maintaine stability while towing.

Stumpjumper83,

I was browsing through the threads and saw this one, even though its old, what did you wind up doing on the single axle and 20 ton tag? I'm looking at doing something similar, however, I need to buy a trailer and truck. I have a neighbor that has an '87 C70 with air brakes and the 8.2 detroit, 5 spd with 2 spd axle. I was curious if a single axle like that along with a 20 ton tag would safely tow a Dresser 175C? Everything I can find says the loader weighs between 32-34k. Since I'm buying a truck, I could get a tandem axle dump instead of the single, but thought I would ask just the same. I do have a class A CDL as well, so no issues there.

Thanks in advance

This is an old thread. We have since bought a single axle mack with 275 hp and an 8LL I move our pc 120 and my gross weight on the scale was just over 55,000 lbs. I don't think I would tow the machine with a lesser truck nor do I think I would pull much more. The machine and trailer definitely move the truck around going down the road. I think that motor Trans setup might be a little light for what you want to move. I think anything over 30,000 would be way safer behind a tandem and that will probably be my next step. Even with my small kx 057 the truck has trouble maintaining highway speeds on the hills.

What kind of empty weight is trailer?

With Your Mack, is it a dump truck?

how would material in/on single truck effect your total weight and trailer weight ?
Where/when does your trucks HP come into this equation?

Hp doesn't determine what you can pull, it determines how fast you can pull it. When I started, it was normal to gross 100,000 lbs plus with a 235 hp Mack, when we got some w/ 300 hp, we thought we were ready for Nascar. I still routinely gross 90k with 300 hp

So if you were starting again...looking to 6 ton of material on truck and two small Machines for total of another 7 including attachments plus trailer...Likely low mileage but need limited hwy runs...do u fight to find a 260 HP truck or accept 220 HP?
