The Martin Mars was dropping water , wasn't close enough to see if they were adding chemicals to make a jelly like slime , the red retardant was being dropped by a Conair Air Tanker .

You can see the mist coming off the plane after water drop is white, Looks like water to me, no retardant

Mars drops water, foam, or thermo gel.(not the red retardant) They inject the foam or gel after they pick up a load of water they can do this continuous for up to 8 hrs. Thermo Gel is a retardant not sure how it compares to the red stuff...

It did look like the Martin Mars was hitting the fire head on with water , The Conair Water Bombers looked like the were hitting the edges of the fire with red retardant .But I was at a lower down the hill . Can only see so much, I am just elated that I got Hawaii Mars Bombs Away Shots on the Fire with 4 video clips,Here are a few more Water Bomber Hits from Conair Water Bomber.

i bought a magazine article on ebay and on the back of one of the pages is an ad for the martin mars plane. very good info and it is dated december 1945.
