I was looking at a machine with a Deutz Diesel engine that is about 80 hp and a 1986. Are parts available if I need them? How are these engines in general? It is in a telehandler / Lull. Thanks,

They certainly have a cult following. They're good motors. The salesmen used to pontificate on why air cooled motors were superior to liquid cooled motors with the related corrosion and such. The horror stories they'd spin about water pumps, sludge and frost. Deutz has now moved on to building liquid cooled diesels. I wonder if the salesmen still use the same salespitch? :tong

Here's a link to some parts suppliers. Maybe you'd want to give them a call to see if they know what they're doing or if they're just a name on a list:

I liked it in my 830 sennebogen, it gave me no problems what so ever. We had trouble when they switched over to cunmmins motors in the 835's....

We have moved on and now were lost....
They are reliable if minded, the cooling belt is a very weak point and needs to be monitored closely. They can develop hot spots if the fins are allowed to clog up with debris. If you hear a cracking sound it is usually a head gasket and need to be repaired immediately or the head, liner and piston track then requiring replacement, which is a proper PITA.That said they are reliable as any other six slapper

They are a single use engine and so expensive to rebuild it is not worth the effort unless you can do it yourself. They last a long time but their cost of operation comes out close to the same as a liquid cooled unit.

Stock hit the major points spot on. Air flow is the biggest problem I have run into on them. Once they get overheated they start leaking oil and then you can never keep them clean.

Pull the sheet metal off the outsides and look closely at the joints. The heads and bases of the cylinders are real important. If they appear to be leaking you will have to give serious consideration as to how much you want or need that machine.

Good Luck!

Great engines, we have them in nearly every lift we have FL-1011 models. Stock is correct on the major issues. They have a few annoying problems though, they use a rubber fuel rail with plastic fittings. They leak leak leak! Keep a piece of it on the machine at all times! Check the belts often and keep the fins on the cooler clean, other than that expect good luck!!

In the U.K the Air Cooled Engines are rated on the top of the Hill, the parts are no problem to get for even very old long serving engines, the blower fan on most units has an Engine shutdown in case of belt troubles, the parts are very reasonable to Buy even from Deutz, to recondition the engine would be less costly than most Engines plus the air cooled units are still being built,as already stated Deutz also build Water cooled engines in Vee and inline spec', the big benefit with an Air cooled engine is it only uses 1 3rd of the fan moved air that a water cooled engine needs, plus you have no water pump, radiator hoses plus coolant, most Water cooled engines also often need Vee Belts to drive larger fans, so the blower belt thing is not an issue, the Build quality of the Air Cooled Deutz is about as good as it gets, I service and maintain Vee 10 and Vee12 units on Drill Rigs that are Hammered every Day with just normal servicing to keep things Sweet.

they are the most precise engine out there...in 1980 i was blessed to go to Deutz factory in Germany and i was impressed...each engine was hand made and assemble one at a time....912 and the 913 's are very strong...
