Cat has some really good failure analysis training. Someone knows where the failure started, unless the fracture surfaces obliterated themselves.

From the bad pictures I'd suspect it started in the rod journal radius.

It broke at the weakest point, after X amount of torsional cycles. Out of 6 3406/C15 cranks I've
seen broken, 5 broke just like that one.

Surely they must have an ECM download.? I’d be interested to see that. The one thing I can practically guarantee is that if it was in a dozer it hasn’t been over-revved.
