Been looking for information on a 27FN. That I’m looking at, specs would be great, also service and parts information. Would any of the 40N info cross over to this smaller unit? IMG_1532.jpeg

Welcome to HEF. The way JLG used model numbers, I would say your 27FN is a fairly normal F series JLG. The "N" stands for Narrow. The 27 was a 40 with a two section boom instead of a 3 section like the 40F had.

I'm going to try pasting the JLG 40F Parts Manual files here.

Off thank you so much for the info. The unit has no forward or reverse movement, owner keeps saying hydraulic filter. After reading most of this thread , I am not as concerned as I was. May have to go pick it up.

It looks to be in really good condition. I doubt the hydraulic filter is causing no drive, but it could be something very simple. On page 2-53 of the parts manual, it shows all the different types of basket controllers they used. Does your 27FN use any of those?

I just finished reading this entire thread, and went through the manuals.WOW! I feel like I know these units personally. I have been thinking of purchasing the one shown above, now I want to, to apply what I have learned. Awesome group of people on here with Off being at the top of the list.

Ended up buying what is supposed to be a 40F, but after reading the forum again I’m wondering if it truly is. Serial number is 732326. It dose not have the basket rotate, it does not have any dump valves? It has Racine bang-bang valves, no proportioning valves. Two of the manual emergency valves are shaft driven from the front of the boom support, the other is at the back of the boom. I have figured out what the 2 valve banks of three do, but it has a single valve with opposing solinoids, one I believe is high drive, not sure what the other is. Another thing I noticed is that the 3rd section of the pump feeds the valve bank on the right, by the hydraulic tank, the middle section feeds the single valve, the one closest to the engine feeds the valve bank on the left side by the main control/ wiring box. Any ideas if it is a 40F, and what the seconded side of the single valve might be for?

It can still be a 40F. They came with different options (like basket rotate) and could have had any of 5 different styles/manufacturers of control valves, and 4 different controllers.

I take it you didn't end up buying the 27FN you posted pictures of?

The 40F's with all Racine bang-bang valves (solenoid valves) and Cutler/Hamer controllers were by far the most dependable in my opinion. Usually a single coil valve is either high drive, or a dump valve.
I don't have the contacts anymore to look up your serial number.

what I always did when I was "mapping" out valves on a machine, was disconnect a wire from the valve, and see what function stopped working. Work your way through all the valves that way. Sounds hokey I'm sure, but very effective.

A picture of the machine you bought would be nice to see :)

And all "F" series JLG's had manually operated emergency decent valves. With one of your valves being on the boom, and no basket swivel, I'm thinking you have a fairly early machine. That 73 at the beginning of the serial number might be accurate as a year.
