I had to change are starter in a big wheel loader. Owner got a new after market starter and was told it would plug in no problems. I'm glad he brought the old one back. Can you see why it wouldn't "just" plug in?

Starter head is indexed incorrectly for the application I see right off along with starter drive being incorrect also.
The "indexing" should not be a big problem. But the gear sure likes like it is a different size, less teeth on the new one?

New replacement is 11 tooth-the old is 12 tooth. By the part # on old starter LAY42800-0070
those are listed as 12 tooth, Replacement for 40-42MT 12 or 24..

Gears were the same, both 12 tooth. I counted both. Neither was an original Komatsu starter. I took the safety relay from the starter on the right and put it on the one on the left. Thankfully the owner didn't get an exchange.

So are you saying the difference was in the safety relay? Not being familiar with Denso starter I would not know what to look at at least in the picture.

To me it did not appear the starter drive gear is retracted far enough into the starter nose and could partially remain engaged with the flywheel ring gear. I did not look at tooth count, only they are both right hand rotation starters and the head indexing is incorrect but easily re indexed correctly. In the current configuration it certainly is not a "plug and play" replacement. I've seen protection relays on both sides of the magnetic solenoid, so gave it no thought.

It was ordered by part number that was still on the old starter. The new one worked when the adjustments were made. Initial problem is that this engine uses two starters. It doesn’t get that cold here so they are taking the risk of shorter life by only using one.
