I really do have no life

Hey peoples....

It's been a while...:(
And I do apologize for not checking in more often.
But you gotta understand that the person who is currently smudging grease on this laptop must not be playing with a full deck

Here it is....
Friday night...
Eating McDonalds again...:throwup
And I'm removing an old but otherwise good turbo from the RattleStar.

Yeah..... I've lost it.......

There's a good reason for removing the turbo.
Get to that later.

Work has still been 6-7 days a week.
Like today...
Wrenching on the RattleStar.

This is a new well we are starting in Thermal Ca.
Since I always seem to be alone(I don't play well with others),
I need to come up with creative ways to load and unload equipment.
This mud pump weight 38,000 lbs.
I've tried many different ways to load this thing.
So far, chaining up the dolly so I can make steering adjustments,
airing up the bags and using the winch is the easiest way.

Pete,

What's the 2 speed switch on the shifter of the dodge for? Before anyone answers "that's to run the 2 speed". I know that, but i'm also pretty sure that Dodge doesn't put those rears in the pickups.

:cool2 nice move Pete. Many will be thinking why not just winch it on forward so it self steers, but they dont, do they, well yes they do and it isnt the way you want it to :D besides you then have to get it off in reverse :Banghead

Last week I took the RattleStar to a friends shop in Fontana.
This 1980 W900 was there waiting for an engine rebuild.
Other than the sick spread between the drivers,
take a look at those torque arms
I've never seen anything like it.

Some specs:
1980 Kenworth W900
Cat 3408 DITA
Cat retarder
Spicer 6 sp. main
Spicer 4 sp. aux
Eaton 2 sp rears

The Cat Doctor

Last week I talked the boss into having the overhead run on the RattleStar.
He's never had anything done to the truck other than oil - filter changes and a few clutches.

Over time I have replaced a few items and chased down a few electrical problems.
I even had a 6 row radiator built and installed since I absolutely hate having to back out of the throttle because she's getting hot.
We live in the desert...
Sure it gets hot.
But if everything is working as it should, you won't have that problem.
If it's not wright, get bit fixed.
I don't buy the lame excuse about her running a little hot so go easy on her when I'm working 10-15 hrs a day.

Since the valve covers have never been off, I went in to get her checked out.
Ron T owns The Cat Doctor in Fontana, Ca.
He only works on Cats and was referred to me by my good friend
Mark Garcia.

When I first went down to Ron's shop, one of the first things his mechanic asked me was if I wanted more power
That's my kind of mechanic :notworthy
I made an appointment for the following Monday which gave me time to install a pyrometer.
No pyrometer... no tune up.... no power.

The valves were way off so we set them tight.
I had the governor checked and set.
The high idle and torque were set. (5 turns ea.) :D
Finally, the timing was checked, repaired and re-set.

Now....
I've been in and driven some fairly fast/strong rigs before.
But this tune up was insane
I mean, I had more power than I could use.
That's why I went with a OR6051 turbo.
This truck is like a rocket now.
There's no more mashing the pedal to the floor.
And no need to drop gears where I once had to drop down to 8th or 7th.
Where I once made almost 17 psi. of boost, I now make 30+ with the larger turbo.
I need a different gauge that goes above 30 psi.
Power?
until I run her on a dyno, who knows?
I'm assured by the mechanic that I'm putting a minium of 400-450 to the ground.
Those #'s were before I changed to the larger turbo.

The object now is to not break anything and to see if I can increase my fuel mileage.

Good to see you back. You were gone long enough I was getting worried about you. All those hrs out in the desert, thought you maybe got lost or something!

Looks like you are enjoying the hydraulic trailer. They sure are handy.
The cat docs logo is great!

HEF on the laptop, out in the field, wrenching on the truck. You are a die hard.

I've picked up almost 1 mile per gallon.
I've done the math and keep records of all the fuel I burn.
I've checked it and checked it again.
Last fill up worked out to 5.7

My Western Star has the same Chalmers suspension shown on the Kenworth, but without the large spread between drivers. It is one beefy suspension. With an air ride cab and seat, it isn't too bad of a ride. It has a lot of articulation and really is an "offroad" suspension. It is about 1,000lbs lighter than a Hendricks spring suspension.

My first weekend off in .....a long time.

The RattleStar is running great but I'm a bit worn out.
We've started another hole for the City of Riverside at Waterman @ Orange Show Rd. We'll start back up at Seal Beach as soon as the city decides on a well design.
