Hello lg junior! That was the second new 046 picture for my collection this day! Great! My bet is the 046 is #10004 built in Kalama 1977, owned by Christian bros, Springfield. They also had #10003, originally mounted on a Madill 079 trailer. Later it was mounted on the only built Madill "069" 4-axle self propelled carrier and went up to Vancouver Island - pictures here: https://www.heavyequipmentforums.co...-in-Nanaimo-BC&p=210835&viewfull=1#post210835

I don't know if you noticed the serials on these two yarders. More pictures and correct serials for both the 009 and 046 are highly appreciated! Are you far away from Huffman & Wright? They also still should have an 046 by their shop, would be nice to see some pictures of that machine too ;)

You are right the serial number on the 046 is 10004. The 009 serial number is 21922. I will try for more pictures when the weather is not so nasty.

I'm really looking forward to that! 21922 was delivered in 1973 and is or was owned by Rose Logging, they had also another 009 as well (22058, delivered in 1975 with a GM12V71). Seems both machines where delivered without carrier or spars.

Rose logging still owns 21922 and they also had 22058 which has been scrapped. The motor from 22058 was donated to the community college diesel program. Rumor has it that both hoists were bought originally by Lillegren and mounted on Skagit trailers with 90 foot tubes. 21922 was owned by Excel logging and then bought at auction by Rose logging, it now has a 737 hoist. 22058 was bought by McDougal , then by Rose, it had an older Skagit trailer with the outside walking beam suspension. I remember it being tipped over while they were changing a flat tire, that might have something to do with why they scrapped a running machine. Here is a picture of the I.D. plate for the tower on the 046, I took the picture at the same time as I photographed both machines.

Not knocking the 60 Series Detroit, but I have a question: When I was still in the trucking industry, most folks wanted nothing to do with this engine, for several tried and true reasons. Why are they so popular in a yarder application. I'm trying to learn something here.

Maybe they use them because they get them at a good price. I have had 2 trucks with 60 series in them, both bought because they were cheap. Got better fuel mileage than the cats and cummins on the same job and had zero mechanical problems. To the best of my knowledge they are still running fine.

What tried and true reasons would make you not want a 60 Series? When I got my first one in a log truck everyone said I'd have nothing but problems. I put 880 thousand miles on it with only a turbo and a water pump it is now a dump truck and still doesn't use oil between changes, and got better mileage than anyone I hauled with. I still have three and would not trade them for any Cat or Cummins, 60 series is an awesome motor it's a shame you can't get one in a truck anymore.

That new 3800 is quite purdy!

I'm thinking they will stuff enough axels under it before they try to move it up to Forks...

Hi, I am new to this forum, read the whole Madill thread and found it very interesting since I worked with these machines back in 1967 and some years.
Question: The tank mounted yarder 009 I operated had as I can remember a Detroit 8V 71 power plant, could that be correct?

Hei Sigurd, about 20 009's was originally delivered with 8V71 engines. Much more common is the 12V71, 303 009's was delivered with that option and a hp-range from 400 to 525. Seems that only 2 early 009's, from 1964, had the 6V92 with 200 hp. 339 009's had different CAT-engines, most of them with 500 hp. Only 22 had Cummins, most of them with 525 hp KTA1150. Håper du har noen bilder av maskinen!

I came up with very accurate numbers of engines in 009's in my post, think I should have put "about" in front of all the numbers... LOL. Sigurd, I think you will be able to post pictures after your third post.

NZLOG - what's that boom - 123/124?

Could the two 009's have had 6V71's instead of 6V92's? The production of the 92 series engines did not start until 1974 and the 6V92 was usually rated much higher than 200 hp. The 6V92t was most common at 335 to 350 hp.

I talked to a fellow today that thought the 046 that belonged to Christian Logging was put on a used Berger trailer that they had purchased. He thought it was a M2A slackline machine originally.

The story we got in the plant for the run of Cat engines was that GMs were in short supply as almost all production was going into military equipment for the Vietnam war. Don't know how much truth there was to that but the time frame fits pretty good. regards d.d.

I think LG might have nailed it on the 6V71s. Makes sense from the time frame. I believe the 6V92s were up around 290-300 HP IIRC.
