As far as price, KW is the dearest US brand by a fairly big margin and I'd say some of the top-spec European gear would be similar. With KW you get trucks that are designed and engineered specifically for Australian and New Zealand conditions, and they vary greatly between the 2. AUS has high ambient temps and big onroad GCM's approaching 200t, whereas NZ's GCM is still only 45t but you have really hilly, winding terrain. WesternStar's are competitively priced and really good value for money, just the build and shipping time for custom units like mine let the brand down.
My uncle ran a 505hp Stralis and a R500 Scania and they were both lemons, always had something wrong. The driver of those rigs had enough and is driving a 4964WStar for us. He's 63 and absolutely loves it, he cant believe how smooth the ride is and the grunt of the C15. Best truck he's ever driven he reckons.
The real value for money rigs are the Japanese brands. Roughly half the price of the other makes, but to be fair you wont get the same life out of them.
Take the Hino's we run as 6x4 tippers: 450hp 1650lb/ft 13L elec. motor, not a flat torque curve and low hp peak like a yank motor but very respectable. 18spd roadranger box, Hino 46# lb diffs on either Hino 6-rod or Hendrikson airbag, huge chassis rails and universals, 4point airbag cab suspension. A really strong, comfy truck. They are heavy, ours tare at 11t with steel deck, but you'll never break one. You wouldn't want to be linehauling at max weight in one but for local work like we do they are great.
If you want to look cool, buy a Yank. If you want to make money, buy a Jappa.
Cheers, Jared
