It's very small aswell, wish I parked my PU beside it for scale..

I see that, only two bogies per side. Finning built a Hydraulic Tank Drill for a very short time, cute little machine. It, too, had only two bogies per side, but it was a hopeless failure. Not enough travel power for steep hills, and not fast enough on the road. The drill in your pic has the same cab as the Chapman Roc-Champ, and looks like the same boom, too. I wonder if it's hydraulic drive. Thanks for some more great pics, by the way! :notworthy

MB Hayes HDX #H112 is a 1972 model. From new it went to Franklin Div. Later it was converted to linehorse. See posted pix and now it is converted to ramp with huge long bumper - truck is operated by local contractor in Port Alberni-

Many posts ago, I posted pics of the old yard crane used at M&B's QCD shop. Well, now it's mine, and all restored and painted. (Thanks for the help,HDX!)

Nice work Trakloader, hope you can find an old Wash up there to go on with further, and you probably get some use for your yard crane too! :)

I got a late dumb question. in post 46 and 51 the truck with the smallish dump looking bed loos like it has a cage over it. was that a screen or grizzly for pit rock. I see it again in pst 51. Also is that one in 51 a water truck I see what looks like hydraulically driven spreader wheels at the bottom of each pipe.

Taylortractornu. The truck with the screen is a sandtruck used for sanding the roads in the winter time The screen on top stops large rocks and mud from getting into the box when the front end loader is loading them The sand comes out the bottom hoppers in front of the wheels. This is done so the sandtruck does not spin out and slide around as much as they do with the sand being spread behind the wheels. Also lets the sandtruck driver know how the spread is going down on the road.Sometimes one of the hoppers will get plugged up with sand and not come out one side or the other so the driver can stop and unplug that hopper. The other truck you asked about is a fire tanker truck and with this plumbing mounted on the back like it is would be for watering down the roads or the dryland sort yard for dust control. Sometimes they water down the gravel roads just before they grade them during long dry conditions Does this answer your questions ??? Let us know

Sander trucks have another special feature. Take a look at posted pictures (MB Unit #H33, H297 and H278) of sander trucks, none of them got stacks. The warm exhaust is guided through pipes to sander box to heat up the sand during winter time.

Smith Sander

Thought you guys might like some pictures of a Smith sanding unit in action. H-147 had one stack, with the other exhaust routed to keep the sand warm. I remember two of these units, originally they could be simply dropped onto an HDX in the Winter, if I'm not mistaken. Had their own little motor, entirely self contained. As HDX says, they were much better than the older type that threw sand BEHIND the driving wheels!

Sproat Lake Division

I worked at Sproat Lake in the Y & L back between 1976 & 1982 - when the big purge happened. I spent some time as a shop helper and used to load trailers on the HDX's during the evening shift, when I got tired of pushing a broom. The old mechanics didn't even care that I didn't have an air ticket, they just showed me how to fire them up and away I went. Different times they were. Does anyone have a list of what trucks were in that division during this era? How about the Yarders and Loaders? I spent much time working on the old J-87 Sparmatic as a rigging slinger - I've even got photos of it and the J-88 parked in a back road up by Hidden Lake just before they were scrapped. I managed to get the builders plate off the '87 and it now hangs proudly on my wall downstairs. Any old Sproat Laker's on this forum?
