I never would have thought of looking on Craigslist for these kind of items. Question: Are trailers S/N's matched to the S/N's of the the trucks when they leave the factory? I didn't see the forward bunk laying around the yard when I was there, so I imagine that is something that wouldn't be included in the sale.

I'm looking forward to seeing the list of the Sproat Lake Div. hauling units. I'll be doing some mental gymnastics when I get to the ones of my era, when I try to match each truck with a long forgotten face & name of a driver. I'm pretty sure that Torkel and several others are waiting to see this list as well. I'm making another plan to head back to Port in September, might make the effort to head out to Sarita this time. I also might head out to Kennedy Lake to look at what Coulson has out there. It's always good weather in the Valley during the Indian summer - I still miss the smell of the slash burning that time of year - don't get that in the city and if you do have it, people complain.

jackd When a truck ordered with a trailer and the truck was given its serial number prior to being built The trailer was given the following serial number So if your truck serial number was 3091457 then the trailer would be serial number 3091458 The only time this changed was with a multi truck order of two or more trucks then the truck serial numbers would all follow each other and the trailer serial numbers would follow after them

jackd Are you sure the bunk was NOT on her and just turned fore and aft The picture from C/L shows it but this pic was taken at the R/B auction Im sure if the bunk is there it will go with her Just a case of lifting it back onto the truck and putting the "Horseshoe" back on the pin

No Bunk

Here's a shot from earlier on this summer and there was no bunk. He might have it laying in amongst his junk, but I didn't see anything red poking out of anywhere. Remember his plan was to put a rock box on it and haul pumice and then he came upon that old Kenworth.

Thanks for the list. I can remember most of the numbers from the H-76 up until the H-278 and then they become more obscure. The H-09 also rings a bell because it was one of the old spares and I think that it spent alot of the time hauling the lowbed. There were lots of old Hayes parked around the camp as fire trucks and am I right in assuming that these were converted from the earlier Hayes units purchased from the late '50s through to the mid '60s? I will give this a real going over this week and try to match names to trucks. Hmmm....

I see the top ears on the water tank and the saddle have been cut off Must have been too high for the lowbed to move so height had be reduced Hope whoever buys her see that The pin is still there for the bunk so it must be around there somewhere The hard thing to find now is the "Horseshoe" that holds the bunk on Upon closer inspection the saddle is laying on the rear deck just has to be welded back in place

Preliminary Analysis

I've been going through the Sproat Lake list and a few memmories come to mind.

Was the H-11 the truck that was converted to the J-73 yarder? I remember the H-10 and the H-09 running around the claim (the drivers might have been B Vermette, Bob Mowatt and 'Horsey'). H-73 was driven by Frank Wesslin and I remember a story about this truck heading out to the woods & pulling into a wide spot on Stirling Arm main for some reason. While backing up, the truck went over the bank right into the lake and this was because the brakes weren't adjusted correctly (this happened just before I showed up on the claim). I remember the H-74 & H-75 but I can't put my finger on the H-76. (I think Alec Spencer drove the H-75) The H186 was the truck driven by George Glazier and I remember the H-187 thru H-190 as well. H-278 & H279 were also common sights. I never saw any pre-load Hayes so I imagine that the H-132 was gone by then. And the rest just don't ring a bell but maybe they will if I stare at the list long enough....

I was working in the shops at Sproat Lake just before the J-73 showed up on the claim in 1977 - the website link above states that this machine was created in these shops. That statement was incorrect because my understanding was that M & B provided the H-11 to Madill down in Nanaimo and they put all the machinery (brand new) on it. It had another drum on it for a 'tag line' so this machine was specifically designed to run a 'shot gun carriage'. Even in that day and age, they were starting to think about fuel economy and could see savings by letting gravity do the work of bringing the rigging out into the setting. We did it for about a year before we went to the standard '3 bullhook butt rigging' and ran her like every other high lead Madill we had on the claim. I worked on that machine extensively.

So they just lashed it onto the deck without even pulling off the boom? How long ago did this happen and where was it heading?

Kenworth 849RF s/n 82046 old M&B unit, had the under slung type springs, was told that it was 1970 that they changed that design to high mount.
Don't know its story, just ended up in Andy's yard.

Okay, Greatwestcam, you are THE MAN! You found old H-204, one of only two 849RF's used at QCD! AND you found old Morreau Trucking #39, and I see our old H-162 has been found, too. I am AMAZED!
