Hard to engage 4x4

Hello all,
I am having trouble with engaging the 4x4 on a case 580se. I have recently replaced the gear oil in the transfer case which did not help the issue. The only way to engage it is to lean down and apply gentle pressure onto the shift lever to feel for when it can engage. I need to disengage it the same way.
If there is a thread on here that discusses this issue, please point me to it. I wasn’t able to find one.

Ps:
The previous owner said that another PO had the transfer case rebuilt as somebody took the machine on the road in 4x4.
