Deere 200D LC Fuel/shut down issue

Hi Guys,

I posted this on another members thread, who had a similar issue with a Deere 644 Loader, but was told I might get better support on the excavator forums.

I have a 200D LC that starts up everyday, no issues, and will run for about 20 minutes or so. Then the machine dies out as if not getting any fuel. The machine will not start back up, just cranks over. However, wait about 20 minutes and the machine will fire back up and run for a few minutes. Come back the next day, same issue. Both fuel filters have been replaced. Neither of them were excessively dirty. I have had similar problems with other Deere machines and it was always the lift pump. I replaced the lift pump and same issue. I found that the first filter was empty after the machine shut down. I figured there may be a bad o-ring on the filter housing. I then disconnected the filter and connected to hoses together. No changes. The second filter has pressure when the machine shuts down. I believe that means the machine is holding its fuel prime, but I could be wrong. I also drained the tank to see if there was any debris (plastic bag) being sucked into the hoses.
I know it is not frozen fuel because I had this problem when the weather warm as well. I am in the northeast and we have just been getting a cold blast the past 2-3 weeks.

Thanks for any help guys!!

Serial number?

I know you said the filter has pressure but has the tank vent been checked anyway?

Fuel return line OK? No kinks, blockages?

Hi mg2361,

I did run the machine with the fuel cap off to check if the vent may be the issue. No result. I did not remove the return line and blow thru it yet, but will try that today. I did inspect all the hoses and did not see any kinks. I also replaced the line from the tank to the first filter and the line from the first filter to the lift pump. I thought maybe something got sucked into those lines or they had a crack.

I will grab the serial number as well.
Thank you!

Did you pull the fuel line off the bottom of the take and drain there or just at the sediment drain. These machines are notorious for the standpipe in the tank to get stopped up.

Hi Mbar,

I replaced the line from the bottom of the tank, where the fuel pulls from, to the first filter. I then used that line to drain the tank. I had a clean, consistent, excellent stream of fuel coming out of the line. I did not blow into that standpipe. I figured if that was blocked the fuel wouldn’t coming out as well as it did.

Hi mg2361,

I checked the lines and found no kinks. The return line appears clean as well. What would a clogged return line cause? I grabbed the serial number too. FF200DX510991.

Thanks for the help!

If it had the fuel injection pump I thought it would have had, it would cause the engine to stop like it ran out of fuel. But now that I have the serial number, your machine has a HPCR pump so if the return line was restricted you would have an engine crankcase full of fuel.

If your first filter is empty then you have a air leak before the filter. Check all hoses and connections leading up to that filter.

If a fuel filter housing is suspected of a internal crack and if possible I fill the tank up high enough for the filter housing to be submerged in fuel and run like that to test. You can think of a water level when it comes to a trackhoe fuel system. The level of the fuel tank is level of the fuel in the lines and filters when bled of air.
