Thanks in advance

G..G..G..Granville.........!! Fetch your cloth.
AFAIK that section of the main control valve is for an auxiliary function.
Also AFAIK the function can be one-way flow (e.g. for a hammer) or 2-way flow (e.g. for a thumb). It all depends on how it is piped and how it is controlled. Hopefully one of the excavator experts will chime in with more information.

Here is the hydraulic schematic in case it helps.

You only have the spool in the main valve, everything else needs to be added, 2 reliefs, pilotlines, pilot pedal valve.
Then there's the matter of regulating the max flow because if you push the pedal to the metal so to speak your tilting bucket will move like a fly swatter and that's no good.
The cat way of doing that is having a controller and a bunch of doodads for that but that's expensive so I'd rather do an aftermarket setup with a simple 1 channel pwm controller so you have a thumbwheel in one handle as input and the pwm control regulating the pilot oil to the spool.

Thanks Per Ericsson.
We went shopping today and picked up most of what we need, second hand. Hope to start fitting in the next few weeks.

You can run a tilter with an electric driven power pack like what we use for tilting cabs on a log loader. That way you can use your auxiliary circuit for something else. We never use pedals anymore for controlling that kind of stuff. We generally buy a control handle with extra switches and an A/B solenoid valve plumbed into the pilot circuit. It's a real pain after awhile jacking that pedal around if you have to use it much.

Update:
We completed fitting last weekend, as I said above we got most of the parts secondhand apart from some hoses and we had to reseal the reliefs. All went together easily enough, we set the reliefs to 2000 psi for now, but can change when we get the bucket if required. We haven’t done anything with flow control, we’ll add it later if needed. Thanks for the help.
Brendan.
