Take a look at this boom cylinder on my friends Volvo excavator. Noticed it was starting to drift and was also making noise while raising. Pulled it apart on the machine and was surprised to see the seals/packing this bad! Our next question is how concerned should we be about the missing material? Will the tank screen and filter catch all of this? KGYxE97ASRiSgrDK%7tTqw.jpg

Good day Kevin
That appears to be a issue with either bent rod or dieseling, material displaced will return back to tank via the main filters however the pieces have to pass the main valve chest, this can result in sticking spool. Attached some information that may be of help.Suggest you give the remaining boom cylinder a look.
Kind regards

How many hours on the machine? Age of the machine, overheating hydraulics, swelled or damaged barrel, pressures set to high, dirty hydraulic oil and so on can be problems. Lots of black stuff on the piston indicate hydraulic oil has not been replaced is a long, long time.
