2014 Cat 289D - only a few lights, nothing else

I have a cat 289D that is only displaying a few red indicator lights up in the top right corner. The CAT display screen doesnt light up. Machine will crank over, but does not start.

Strange thing is, the lights (parking brake light, hydraulic pressure light) are on all the time, even with the key off. The battery also has a heavy draw on it all the time - dead within 24 hours.

Im leaning towards the ECM. Battery is good, confirmed with a second working battery. Charged overnight to full system voltage - so its not a weak or low voltage issue. Ive pulled every fuse out of the cab to ensure its not a strange accessory issue. This machine doesnt have a radio, so it cant be the known short. Have any ideas on what to check next?

ECU part number is 1J770-59051. Secondary part number on it is 112500-1090. ECU also shows an engine model code of V3307-CR-TE4B-CTP-1 ( i only post this portion because its on my lap right now. Ive pulled it from the machine.

I did test without an ECM to see if the phantom draw still existed. It is no longer drawing power and all indicator lights are off now as well. I dont know what all runs through the ECM - this may be expected behavior. Im still getting the electrical system down on this machine.

Thanks!

If you want an electrical schematic post a machine Serial Number.
Im leaning towards the ECM.
Which one, engine or machine.?

Those are not Cat Part Numbers, maybe Kubota.

There may be a few relays (I can think of three off-hand) that you may possibly not have found yet. Could be one of them causing the parasitic drain.

Machine serial is TAW01498

Question 2 - I pulled the ECM mounted next to the motor. Is the machine ECM the display panel in the top right corner of the cab? If so, i dont believe its that one. Ive seen machines run with that panel dead. This machine will crank but wont start, and is throwing up lights even when the key is off.

Question 3 - The ECM numbers are the only ones legible. I've attached a photo of them for further investigation. There is a label on the back, but the weather has gotten to it - its just white at this point.

That's the engine ECM.
Is the machine ECM the display panel in the top right corner of the cab?
Nope. It's the one mounted to the front of the rear firewall, only accessible by lifting the cab. See page 21 of the schematic for an illustration showing its location.
The ECM numbers are the only ones legible.
They are Kubota Part Number, because KB manufactured the engine for Cat. The Cat Part Number was 436-0821 when the machine was built, it has since been updated to 494-0063.

TBH I would go for the three main power relays located on the same firewall as the ECM, a bit to the left side of the machine. You will find them illustrated on Page 14, Grid D-10 of the schematic and also on the same illustration on Page 21 as the Machine ECM.

ISSUE RESOLVED

Per Nige's suggestion, I pulled the control panel that was lighting up strangely (The CAT Advanced Display). With the harness unplugged from the back, the machine now starts and runs just fine. Something inside of that box must have been the issue. My machine had the first gen (Part number 378-1006.02). I contacted CAT and talked to a technical representative. He had me test pins 1 and 2 together - they should have 12 volts all the time. Pins - i think it was 1 and 8 - your looking for black ground and a yellow wire should be showing 12 volts when the key is on. If those are behaving correctly, but your lights on the cat advanced display never go off, then the display itself is fried.

A new one ran me about $1400. Don't let them talk you into needing a field rep to come on site. These come pre-programmed for any "D" or "D2" series machine. My local cat dealer tried to tell me i had to pay for field service.

Just plug it in and go.

The part numbers are as follows
GEN 1 panel - 378-1006 (this panel is the most problematic - per the CAT tech i spoke to)
GEN 2 panel - 543-1326 (this was the only one i could find. seems to be a pretty good stock of them as of today. my local dealership had 4 in central ohio when i called)
GEN 3 panel - 657-4558 (this one was on back order. Parts department had no idea on an ETA.)

Hope this helps anyone down the road...
