    No more Cat 12 grader

The 140 is nimble like a 12 but heavy enough to handle material like a 14. There really is nothing quite like one. Kudos for CAT for bringing the steering wheel-control lever system back where it belongs. Sidebar, does anybody detect a hint of the OLD COKE/NEW COKE market manipulation of...

    No more Cat 12 grader

First they scrapped the pony motor. Then they changed the paint and took away the steering wheel. Now they are changing the nomenclature. And the key. They changed the key. That was their one step to far. Is it still a CAT, or is it a VOLVO? Hey, thanks big ben. Seems our posts crossed in the...

    Rain in Excavator Hydraulic Tank?

Same thing happened to me, except it was the fuel tank cap left open during a pretty good rain. After shooting myself in the foot, I drained water from the sediment bowl several times over the next two days. Then the water cleared and clean red diesel appeared. Lucy for me, there was no water...

grading a 10 foot road with a 14 foot blade

Coastlogger, do you mean to tell us a Champion motor grader has resale value?o_O

    No more Cat 12 grader

Cat can play name games all it wants, but until CAT brings back the traditional grader control levers, it's graders will remain in the trash pile. Used to be, you couldn't get a motor grader operator off his machine. Now you can hardly find an operator on a joy stick motor grader. Nobody wants...

Filter Life When Submerged In Oil

Nige, Re: per test recommended in post 14 above, the pink wire going to the fuel shut-off on the D4G XL reads zero voltage with the instrument cluster key in the off position, master key on. Reading 11.99 volts with the master and cluster keys both on, wire connection separated, engine off.

    Cat D4g electric issue

I wonder if it's included with the CDROM/DVD copy that may be several hundred dollars cheaper than the print version?

    Cat D4g electric issue

Nige, Are the wiring schematics you refer to in the parts book or service manual? The schematics I see in my D4G parts book are a little hard to read. And the entire book is in black and white.

Filter Life When Submerged In Oil

Whew. Now that the serial number issue is settled, I turn to page 20 in the parts manual and find there is another plug that looks like it has a manually operated valve to drain the engine oil from the side without getting underneath the machine to pull the main drain plug. Any thoughts on which...

Filter Life When Submerged In Oil

I have verified the serial number on the D4G XL under discussion as: MHK04990

Filter Life When Submerged In Oil

Ser. No. CAT00D4GAHYD00836 I will be checking on the machine in the morning and verify that number, I wasn't too careful when I scribbled it down and there is some ink that ran on the last D that could make it a P or an 0. Or, perhaps this is the real serial number is simply: HYD 836...

Filter Life When Submerged In Oil

At the risk of coming off like a real rube, there is a stop mechanism on this machine? Used to be we just cut the fuel off with the throttle lever and spun the pony engine. Then they came out with electric starters. So you see where I'm coming from. Where is this new fangled wonderment, the...

Filter Life When Submerged In Oil

A little looking around, and we do have an operation and maintenance manual for this D4G XL tractor as well as a machine fluids recommendations reference manual. To whit: Engine oil capacity with empty filter is given to be a mere 3.4 gallons U.S. I infer from that the machine can be started...

    2004 Cat D3G XL s/n JMH00765 JOYSTICK PROBLEM

Nige, how do you get such information from CAT? Has there been some sort of settlement whereby a CAT customer/owner can access that type info under a "right to repair"? My pocketbook is still spinning after replacement of the left hand joy stick on a D4G XL. Three field trips by Cat to diagnose...

Filter Life When Submerged In Oil

How long will the engine, hydraulic and fuel filters be usable when installed on a D4G hydrostat but not run after the last oil and filter change? In this particular instance the machine has sat idle for about eight years. With new batteries it fired right up and the machine was instantly...

Smallest grader that still does decent work

Since CAT no longer makes a small grader, the NORAM is in the CAT rental fleet. Champion graders appear to have been gobbled up by Volvo and later discontinued. Anyone know any different about Champion, please hold forth.
