Converting a machine from System One back to the conventional heavy duty u/c is very simple. The only machine that is not able to convert back is the D6K dozer.
I would imagine that parts for the D6K will be available soon. When converting a high track dozer back remove the guards around the idlers and change the roller guide wear strips due to the HD track being wider. The idlers also need the spacers removed from the idler mounting brackets. Very simple procedure.

There's a guy on the Brirish Construction equipment forum (ceforum.co.uk) that has done this on a regular basis with D6's. Posts as CarlD6r on the photo thread "Caterpillar Dozers and Scrapers".

From my understanding if the D6K had conventional as an option than it is able to be converted; all D6K2 machines can be converted to conventional.

Standard track chain, every link has one pin and one bushing, the links are offset from one end to the other. The open end that takes the pin fits over the closed end of the next link which has the bushing pressed in. System one has two outside straight links, then two inside straight links, like a conveyor chain. So it's two bushings, two pins, two bushings, two pins, etc. Not sure what the pros and cons are.

What I'm told is the big advance was that the bushings rotated so the tracks didn't need to be dismantled to turn the pins and bushings. The rails only ride on the bottom roller so the cut valleys that happen in the links should not happen anymore. I'll try to post of photo from and old file I have.

They had rotating bushings long ago I can't see any reason why you couldn't run the narrow idlers with a rotating bushing chain, so there must be another reason... oh wait, CAT wanted to do something different again like the high drive design, that's it! LOL
