A modernized hall Scott probably could get in the 4-6 with today's trucks
The only thing you could really add is a fuel injection system---already had a mag ignition
plus overhead cam. For that bore and stroke pretty hard to squeeze more than 3.5 mpg.
Large displacement Gas ICE power that gets any sort of mileage, is about as likely as a
piece of used toilet paper being handy to reuse.

I remember years back a shop I worked at--customer had a 76 Ford 4x4 150 with a 390.
He wanted it rebuilt, plus aim for 17 to the gallon with some changes. My reply was this
engine has a 4.050 bore with a 4.00 stroke and not great intake system, it's only mission
is to eat gas, more gas and have little baby 390's.-----He just stood there looking like
someone had pissed in his camp fire.

Got a compliment from the owners dad today--This truck was his as a glider new, I built the
Series 60 14L 550 hp 1850 engine that went in it. It came out of a tractor that got laid on it's
side at Lime Canyon about 10 years ago now. Over rev'd and bent the valves which shut it
down. It is approaching a million miles-never been into since I rebuilt it, other than injectors
& running overheads. Still puts on 300 a day. Not often the I would ever hear any good.

Perhaps you saved him a ton of money and dissapointment. Change is tough and you did him a favor with that direct approach.

Decided to add some extra attention lights, same brand as the amber Aero Star. I like rotating
emergency lights over the strobe LED type. Both of these were in nice condition and were the
exact size I've wanted. $150 for both, a newer similar is $350 each. And the donor truck.

The donor is clearly going to the scrap heap. I think that nose could be salvaged with a hot saw and it is really an art deco work of art from the front. Put it inside on a big shop wall.

Water pump for fires is what's wrong with it, it has a hydraulic ladder. The 8V71 and Allison in it
are in good shape. The engine is fairly dry. But one thing it's got is perfect set of Grover Stutter
Tone emergency air horns in almost perfect condition.

Funny thing about this fire engine, it has a single axle with a 3 stage hydraulic squirt ladder.
If {If} one was to remove the box and ladder which is mounted on a huge ring gear
pivot, remove one of the stages, set it to the front put the box back on minus water tank,
plenty of room to add other boxes. A guy could build if he was ambitious one hell of a service
truck body, complete with out riggers. Could mount on any truck. The cylinder for the boom
is 4".

There are some real nice stainless 360 pivot work lights on the back I'm going to scam on to
for the tow truck. Plus there are two high power flood lights mounted on the ladder I need those
too.:)

I wonder if Aviation has gone to LED Landing lamps yet. Used to see old perlux or other fog or running light housings with broken lamps in them, SHP in many states did not cotton to the HIGH Energy Discharge Aircraft lights on Highways. They would fit these housings!!

That one style above is a Unity light housing which houses the standard 5.75 work light
a Wagner 7619. One of the three fire engines has Diezt work lights, And guess what---
those are 120-130V three wire. Can't even find 12V for those housings, it uses a lamp
with a real thick edge, so no way to really clamp tight. Fire trucks being built on certain
customer specs in those years 50, 60, 70 & 80's it could have some odd ball no longer
made equipment.

So it got the Unity's with single 12V wire and work light, installed, light up real nice in the
shop with lights out. I don't really like LED's--tOO bright and give me a headache working
around them at night.
