Dealt with one of those scenarios this week. Driver crosses a scale in Montana and gets red lighted,
didn't bother to check if all were turning on the trailer. Ground off 4, right center left rear. Then came
up with the story the system must have froze up just before scale.

Super singles, no thanks.

My trucker friend EK ( RIP) lamented that trend to super singles. He could see how they hammered the road differently. I agree.

Odd that an empty vessel would still be placarded?
OTR would / could be fined for such an infraction, if I remember correctly ?

For rail they have to remain placarded for the last load unless cleaned/purged, assuming it needed placards to start same as trailer tanks. It's vans you have to watch your unnecessary placarding.

Not a overload but a runaway. Empty tank car rolled out of Walla Walla on it's own, radared at 50 plus
on tracks that have a speed limit of 25mph there so bad.

My grandfather's brother is the star of a story in a history book for riding a flat car loaded with marble, (likely 120000 LBS of stone) It slipped away in Dorset VT & rolled by gravity 14 miles before he jumped & it crashed. Evidently, enough downhill to continue to roll, I doubt it got up great speed.


Other side of Mother's family, grandfather & uncle were behind the coal car in a two train head on, 1927. Near the Connecticut River in Rockingham VT. One can still find news reports John & Frank Lent. Death reports say they were scalded by steam. Nearest house was theirs, & the witnesses went to their house to use the phone.

My Dad was a engineer his train was hit buy a runaway. They were setting down hill from a elevator and a single grain car rolled off this was back when they had cabooses . It hit the caboose pushed it up inside the next grain car then it opened another car up. Dad said he felt something and sent his i think brakeman back to see for some reason i dont think the caboose had a radio and the brakeman for sure didnt have one. He ran back to tell Dad so he could radio for help. The 2 guys in the caboose were hurt bad but both returned to work when they healed up. I have some picture if i can find them. I worked in a rail car shop its very impressive to see a car run over a tie placed on the tracks and not derail.

I have two stories mixed together or something i need talk to a guy that worked with Dad and find out for sure but i think he was in to different run away wrecks. This one wasnt the one i remembered him coming home and telling us about. The one i remembered and have saw pictures of wasnt as bad. What looks like snow is grain.IMG_20220128_083356.jpg

I was on the sounder train doing about 70 in the valley south of Auburn, and we met another train just as it hit a tie somebody had dragged onto the track. There was ballast and all sorts of stuff flying up in view and off the side of the train, luckily no broken glass. They stopped and did a walk-around for damage before proceeding.
They did that same walkaround after an emergency stop for someone walking on the tracks.
