Last Saturday Ken Eder of Carthage, NC, 65, was killed when he got crushed while working on a train derailment. Ken has what is believed to be the largest private held collection of antique machines in the world. It was at 1,100 machines and growing the last time I was at his place 4 years ago. The details are still sketchy but it appears he got crushed while righting a railcar loaded with heavy scrap iron. Having been in the railroad emergency work for his entire life, Ken was well experienced in what he did. Please take a second look at how you are doing things. We all get comfortable with what we do often but all it takes is that one glitch that can be tragic. I lost a friend, the antique machine communities of all kinds lost a dedicated member, his family lost a husband, father, and grandfather. Hopefully his death will be a reminder for all of us to reconsider the chances we take each day and his passing will have some purpose. My thought and prayers are with his wife Patti and his family.

Thanks for sharing that. It seemed inappropriate to click like.
Agreed on the point you were making. Complacency is a killer.
Its unfortunate we need a tragedy to remind us to be cautious in what we do.

Sorry to hear about this. We all certainly take our safety for granted at one time or another. Certainly too young.

So sad to hear. That close to being able to walk away if he wanted to and then have that happen. Sorry for your loss.

Lost a good buddy last week .
67 years young cutting firewood .

Tree fell wrong and he passed on . :(

He was very experienced about cutting trees but this time was different .

My take on it is when the bell tolls for us…… It will come out of nowhere in a least expected situation ?

That's sad to hear indeed. And circumstance can catch any of us off guard or catch us not able to predict how an unstable load will shake out, even for a seasoned mind. Nevertheless, I at least take every measure my brain can think of to be able to come home at night to eat supper, but it could catch me one day. Sad day indeed old iron.
