Help! How do Reynolds Hydraulics Work?

I bought a Reynolds 8c pan/scraper and got it hitched up to the tractor today. It has two hydraulic circuits with the most puzzling operation.

The first circuit lowers the pan (cut) as well as lifts the axles (cut). The second circuit raises and lowers the apron, lowers the axles (haul), and raises the pan (dump). To dump the pan, I have to activate lower the apron/raise the axles until the axles are maxed out, then it starts to raise the bowl. After the bowl is raised I can raise the apron to dump the load. If I push the first circuit the opposite way of lower pan/lift axles (cut) at the same time as lowering the apron on the second circuit, it speeds up the pan dump speed, but if I let go of the second circuit, the first circuit dead heads.

I figure something over the years was installed or adjusted incorrectly. I've tried to find an owners manual online for some guidance, but I haven't found anything yet. I have some general checking to do, the pan didn't want to cut very well, I'll check the cutting edges tomorrow. Does anyone have a spec for how high the tongue should be from the ground for the proper geometry?

I did get the tractor stuck, running off too far off the edge of the pile while pushing with the grapple to smooth the pile.

Thanks, yeah. I've seen that but it doesn't give much detail. I can find a parts manual as well.

I've seen some sales literature that says something about a 3 line hydro system being an option... I've considered converting it to that, although I'd think it working "properly" would be cheaper. I'm going to peruse youtube to see if I can see video of a Reynolds functioning to look for ideas.

The parts manual should have a hyd. schematic in it as well as how to make several adjustments. It's been many years since I worked on Reynolds.

I might have misspoke, I can find parts lists from the various parts suppliers.... let me see if I can find a parts manual specifically.

I have an old 14yd reynolds. It has 2 circuits. 1 raises and lowers the pan (raises and lowers the axles) and the other takes care of the apron and dumping functions. To dump.... the apron goes up and hits it's max height then the bowl starts dumping. Then when done dumping when the bowl is put back down all the way then the apron starts going down. I prob didn't do a rreal good job of explaining it. Basically the axles (up and down) are on one circuit and everything else is on the other.

That is very helpful! I can trace hoses and see what goes where.

To clarify, the apron control has no effect on the axles (and vice versa)?

One of my axle cylinders has a third connection towards (but not at) the base of the cylinder that feeds pressure back to a valve on the front of the pan. I’ll do some more investigating.

That is correct. That's how mine is anyway. I have pulled a few others (not reynolds) that operated the same as mine.

I don't think mine has this connection you are talking about but I will take a better look at it and let you know.

I found the serial number on my pan (stamped passenger side of the pan, towards the top of the apron), it's an 8CF.

I called Reynolds, they were no help, they said call the dealer and buy a manual. I called CrabTree Mfg in Yazoo, MS, he only offered to sell me parts and "make sure the hoses are hooked up right!"

I didn't take pictures of the axle cylinder with the 1/4" line, but you can see the line in the pictures (previously replaced a portion with brake line).

If no one has any advice on a course of action, given I can't get information very easily, I'll probably convert it to a three circuit pan. I'm sure the design concept is simple and ingenious and all, but a few additional hoses and plugs and it's stupid simple and just works.

My pan lift circuit is just piping only. On the apron/dump circuit there is a valve somewhat similar to the valve in your pics that the brake line is connected to. Mine sits under the apron cylinder and is plumbed to that cylinder as well. I will try to gets some pics tomorrow.

I have a 1410lgp(I think that is what it is). Sure sounds to me like you have your hose pairs mixed.

I would guess the small line is for a pressure relief tied into a return to tank. To keep you from ramming the apron or push off cylinders over and over against the stops.

I spent some time running a old soilmover scraper that ran on a similar system to this. We rented them out (the company I worked for), and every farmer wanted to put their 200 hp front wheel assist tractors on our small scraper, and would repeatedly pull it into pieces. At least it looks like you have the right size tractor on it.

Could you show some more pictures of the tongue and the full hose and lines set up, and I'll try to scratch my head and remember how ours worked.

Absolutely on the pictures. I can shoot a video, would probably be easier to show everything in context.

On the hoses, all the whips that connect to the tractor are the same size.
