Ok, the two GM 6V is designated 6VA in my list so they probably are 6V71. I guess some of the 8V71 may have been changed by the owners with 6V92? As I understand DD the Detroits must have been prefered by the customers.

I`m impressed of all the details you gentlemen have about the various machines from Madill and others!" My" first 009 was at Port McNeill, owned by Rayonier 1967/68 , engineer was Emil Pazarena and machine number 1200( guess this was Rayonier numbers).
Has anyone specs about this machine, like line pull and capacity, plus history?

Rayonier had some "S" spars and 009's as well. The 009 was first sold in 1964 and it seems like they bought the first 009 with "S" series spar then. In 1965 they bought 4 009's, one of them had a "J" series spar (bush?) and 3 had "S" spars and Mark 22 chain sprocket. All mounted on M6 carriers and with GM 8V71 engines with 300 hp. The "S" spars is mentioned to be in Jeune, Holberg and Manhatta. They also got two more relatively similar machines delivered in 1967, on M4A3 carriers. Both of these was converted to 026 A-frame dump hoists with Holberg as home (thats probably for the 026's).

I was looking for 8V71 engines... and then I maybe found the 1200 or Madill # 41200... It had ordinary GM 12VA with 400 hp, but spar is special; a trailer mtd View Sparmatic. "Home" was Jeune Landing. Is that correct? It is a Sparmatic forum here too, maybe you should look through that also...

I have no specs for the 300 or 400 hp 009's but the 3-500 has 52 000 lbs (full) to 106 000 lbs (empty).

Not knocking the 60 Series Detroit, but I have a question: When I was still in the trucking industry, most folks wanted nothing to do with this engine, for several tried and true reasons. Why are they so popular in a yarder application. I'm trying to learn something here.

Our 124s done 17 000 hours, blown 2 turbos, one intake presure sender and dosent use a drop of oil between changes, pretty good run id say!!

The Sparmatic ended up in Mahatta and it was there until we got rid of six of the eight towers we had there. I believe we shut them down around 1979 or 80. I think the pipe went to Gold River to replace the one they pulled over. One of the Madills had the 8V71 not sure but I think it had a 60 foot pipe on it. Thats they called a salvage tower back then. It went in behind the 90 footer and cleaned up all the small wood the bigger machine left, what back then we called salvage is now called gang, and it went to the Port Alice Pulp Mill as pulp. That went on until Domans took over and used it for sawlogs

Marine Engineer,
Yes it looks like a 90 footer, I was only 12 years old in 1967 and still in school, but all I wanted to be was a logger

Your pictures have excellent quality, Sigurd!

It then seems to be no resemblance between the Rayonier nbr 1200 and Madill 41200. It seems also I was wrong about the spars on the 8VA engined 009 - all of them withouth the one with the shorter "J"-spar had the more light duty 90 feet series "E" spar. 3 delivered to Rayonier in 1965 and two in 1966 (later converted to 026 dump hoists).

It may also be confusion by Madill about the numbers, so it would be interesting to know if you remember any more of the Rayonier 009 numbers, Sigurd. Or maybe you can help, 075?

Torkel

I worked for Madill from 1990 to 1993, the numbers themselves have no meaning or reference to anything about the machine to which thy are applied. They are merely for identification purposes. Either Pat Madill or Tom Niel told me this when I asked them the same question.
Contract Logger set me straight on the Madill yarder numbers. I know there are the 009's 071's 120's 171's 172's. What do all the model numbers mean?

Some one has probably answered this but yes the "S" stands for Sam. He started out Blacksmithing in Nanimo and then eventually the business started making Yarders.
Just found my way back on to the S Madill Loggin Equip site---- does anyone know for sure if the S stands for Sam ?.....My great grandpa Robert had 12 children and Sam was oldest.......... as far as I know he was a blacksmith in small hamlet called Clanwilliam in southern Manitoba.....I guess he being the oldest struck out on his own and didn't stop until he reached Vancouver Island---hopefully that's a reasonably accurate family history.....most of the family remained in Manitoba although another branch may have moved to southern Alberta ......Thanks from Robert Madill (Edmonton Alberta ---moved from Manitoba 35 yrs ago)
