A while ago there was one of those massive round bails sitting in the ditch at the corner before the scales here. Not sure if it "fell off" to not be overweight, or fell off from not being tied down. Sure wouldn't want to hit one of those though.

I lost track who it was. Lead singer from some 1980s musical group. Somebody left a round bale out in a steep meadow. It rolled downhill, across a road & killed the guy as he was driving past. Happened a few years ago.

Locally it's rare for anybody to tie them down in any way. Some have special round bale wagons, each bale gets a gap between two bars to settle into.

I'm not sure I see a problem. 13-14 ton excavator & 4 ton loader on a 25 ton trailer. I don't know about the trailer rating of the truck?
Tie down seems lacking. I understood a bucket needs to be chained also.

A fellow I occasionally work with bought a new excavator 18 years ago. I asked before I saw it what it weighs. He said 20 tons. That's all you can haul with a pintle trailer. I'll have to ask again. It seems I see more & more 25 & 30 ton trailers behind tandem dump trucks.

There are 25 and 30t tags, takes a very different pintle hitch and ring, Six bolt or Eight bolt pintle is rated higher and I believe the ring is considerably thicker cross section with a spring damper.

If the bales are firm and tied tight( the guy making the bales has to do a good job) then if they are stacked correctly and interlocked they can stay put reasonably well. We mostly only hauled across the fields back to the yard. There was a lot of incentive to stack them correctly as it was even more work to have to re-load if any fell off. We were happy to work with round bales back in the mid 70's. They were a lot faster to make but more expensive to feed because you had to start a tractor every morning.

Scrappers have been more active of late, hauling into a yard outside of Warrenton MO, there have been MoDOT inspectors stationed along the N Outer Road for several weeks doling out citations for overloads to unsecured loads to unsafe materials conditions(No Brakes or Lights functional on Trailers), ending with many of the more severe towed to impound lots with License removed.

About time.

Heard today these Targeted Scrappers thought they would slip one over on MoDOT Inspectors, shaved the GVWR Tags off of several pickups, lighter 2 ton trucks to sneak by Overloaded, out came the MoDOT Specs Books by Manufacturer and Model types, BONANZA Ticket Day!!!
