Vigilant The hood on the HDX post 877 is a standard Hayes HDX hood 70 inches long with a 12V71 GM engine The hoods on ALL Hayes trucks would vary depending on the engine she was built with Say it was built with a Cummins engine then the hood as with all of them was hand built to fit that one truck and it would be shorter than the hood on a GM 12V71 unit. We have seen two trucks come off the assy line right behind each other and the hoods although almost identical would not fit properly on the other truck When the guys were building the hood (standard hood was 5 piece three top and two side skirts)they would start with the center section and then break (roll) each side piece and form it to that truck This would ensure a tight fit so it would not move around and wear itself out. If you talk to any driver that got or drove a brand new Hayes ask him and he will verify that the hood was just as solid and tight as the rest of the truck It is a very fond memory now because there is no more new Hayes's First chance I get I will measure up one of the Arctic Hoods OK

Greatwestcam Well Done good to see her still in one piece She is old unit # 225 from BCFP's Renfrew Division Delivered Feb 7 1964 When you look at the front of the hood you can see where it has been extended to accommodate the 12V71 engine. This truck was built with the 903 V8 Cummins that was so popular in that period 350HP Spicer 8241C main and Spicer 8341C aux trans Clark BD70,000 rears and 13.298 ratio and that would be a top speed of 34 1/2 MPH 90 inch track As you can see by the tail end of the truck she was a PreLoad The ramps for the trailer are still there. As with most of BCFP's trucks when the Cummins failed they were replaced with the good old standard 12V71s Do you know what her status is??? Is she up for sale??? This truck was a VERY SPIFFY TRUCK when delivered She was a Hayes Show Truck prior to delivery Im sure some of the BCFP guys will chime in here when they see her

Now that is funny! I marvel at how you can tell one from the other. Then really enjoy hearing all the details of how the truck was equipped and where it has been. One day I will get to see one at work, I hope with a big load of logs. Thanks for sharing with us.

HDX, sorry I don't know whats up with the BCFP truck, just saw it parked, maybe 69hayes can keep a eye on it.
Here is one that hayesno1 has pics of, talked to the owner as he was getting it ready for the barge to go to work, said the ramps on the back are because the loader at the beach is a little small for the job so it pushes the trailer up on it. said the truck came from the island, the trailer is one made by Canadian Kenworth, could just see through the paint on the data plate said s/n 36 TTL. truck is HD33-70 s/n 6032994 nice to see it still working.

Greatwestcam and HDX; Great pictures Greatwestcam and great information HDX. Super combination of pictures and knowledge. HDX; now I know when you are referring to "The Arctic Trucking" trucks. I had no clue before.. I am looking forward to see a an Arctic Truck again at the Hayes Aniversary show. I just got my ticket to BC - tickets to Canada are pretty expensive this year - but I cant go without. Looking forward to see many of you guys.
HDX; Re. #H240 was she some kind of preloader or was the ramp made afterwards? I am still amazed this old beautyfull lady will go back to work - think about it; all most 50 years old in a very tough environment.

Hayesno1 She was a Conventional Truck and Trailer unit but I can see where you compare them to the HD Hayes's that Northwest Bay Division (M&B) got a few years later with the Winch built into the water tank /headache rack behind the cab and folding reach's and the ramps on the tail frame -- very similar to the BCFP HDX's I think that one of these old girls will be at the show and she will have a FOR SALE sign in the window She has been restored and is painted Euclid Green You know the one I mean I think.

Greatwestcam I had the good fortune to scope this truck out some time ago when it was for sale in Campbell River. It was interesting to go over her and just look and try and piece her together She looks proper but when you start digging things were for sure NOT RIGHT She was ordered by Dalla River Logging BUT she ended up going to Bill Niel via Western Woods Logging.Delivered Jan 1956 This is where it gets interesting because The ID plate on the dash says HD 20-60 --in other words she had a 200 HP Cummins NOT a 335 Cummins. If she did it would have said 33-60 Also engine serial # was 7W12198 not 7W12918. The 335 was not yet born!It is a know fact that Hayes would re-issue a ID Plate if the original was stolen for re-registration purposes and because the engine was updated by that time it could well have been stamped with "335" instead of the original NHB 600. You can see where the screws holding the plate on have been changed. I puzzled over her for the better part of an hour Her original Hayes Cab and hood were replaced (note the hole in the L/H side for the dual air cleaners)as well as the rad. water tank was replaced with the Columbia one on there now as well .Nothing fit really tight to the cab like it should have where parts got bolted on. She did still have her 4600 rear ends and 11:00X22 rear tires Cant remember if the main was updated from the original 8251-A but the aux was still a 8341 She also came new with an 11 foot Seattle Logging Bunk This is not the first one that this happened to but it does cast a shadow of doubt as to her true history.I really think that she was rebuilt at a shop or in a camp because they needed another truck and there was a fair amount of Hayes parts in the bone yard so they just fixed her up and squirted her Yellow again Maybe someone out there has seen her before or remembers some of the details

Hey Trackloader, what so you think of this one.
Moving the new A sticks to Juskatla, one truck forward and one truck in reverse, all the way from Br 40 (I think, getting a little fuzzy with time)

Here is a movie of the sticks in action, after they were set up. :)

Reading through this thread and looking at the tremendous photo history displayed here is great. It appears that there are several people that follow it that, like myself, are fascinated by these tremendous trucks and those of you that either have or do get to drive them. Several times I've seen questions about different aspects of these logging operations that are commonplace to those of you in the bush but foreign to those of us outside the area. I found a video documentary from the logging industry on Vancouver Island for my young boys and would recommend it to anyone that likes these trucks and doesn't have easy access to them. I obviously have no knowledge of the politics, beaurocracy, current state of affairs in the region and have no idea if this film would bother in any way the guys that do work in the area but it shows a lot of the Hayes and Pacific trucks working for Hayes Forest Service in 2004 and displays things like the A-frame poles unloading and various equipment that most of us simply have no access to. It is called "Logging" and was licensed by Diamond Farm Publishing. I got it from them. Found it in their catalog, not on their internet site so you might have to call them but also just saw it on Amazon.com.

It's been a very long time since I have posted, but I have been trying to research an old Hayes Clipper, I have finally recorded the serial number since it's not infested with bees this year (yet).
I am wondering if any of you would like to tell me everything you can know from the number 3032428 as I'm extremely interested in the history of this Hayes.
Thank you, it's much appreciated-Nigel.

fire capt Welcome to the site. I think that the DVD you are talking about was made by Dylan Winter from England. It is a pretty good presentation of the logging industry up this way. There are a few more available now from over there now. Scope out www.oldpond.com There is two just released through them called looking at logging Pt 1 and Pt 2 made by CP Video Im not sure about the format because they are PAL and we arn't As for the guys on here ,well we just love to share this stuff with anybody that is interested. You will find every kind of worker in the forest here EXCEPT a Chokerman of coarse. LOL
