This configuration is what we up here call pulling a pup. I cant say for sure but I would estimate the load on the truck would be about 85 Tons and the load of logs on the Pup trailer would be about 60 Tons Then combine the weight of the truck and trailer at 37 Tons and the weight of the Converter trailer and the short reach last trailer at 12 Tons each It would come out to around 200 Tons. What would happen is the truck pulls up under the "A" Frame Dump machine and the load is lifted off the truck and weighed and then dumped into the water. The driver would then pull the pin and unhook the rear load. His first trailer is then lifted onto the back of the truck using the dump machine. He then backs up and hooks up the rear load and pulls ahead then the process is repeated again. As with the front unit the (last) trailer is also loaded onto the converter trailer This is how the truck would return to the bush for another load. I dont know if this helps to answer your question or not. Let me know. Everything up here is now in METRIC but these weights are all in the good old understandable scale of 2000 lbs to the ton

Sigurd Yes the Allison is a 6 forward and one reverse speed auto trans The picture posted by 075 above #874 is that of a Clark 8 speed auto trans The Clark was far more entertaining because you could go just as fast in reverse as you could ahead. That is if you could keep the truck on the road LOL

Thanks very much HDX for this informative post. As for old understandable scales: I had some trouble telling my folks how big the logs were on the island, the scalers used board feet and here we use cubic meter and I couldnt convert it LOL
Concerning post 883, yes I can imagine that would be a highball (hope I didnt use a wrong word, long time since).
Again thanks HDX

This may interest those who haven't heard.

Check out Hank's Truck Pictures site. Under trucks shows attending is the poster for the 90th aniversary of Hayes show in Port Alberni. Tried to upload poster but this site is a pain to add photos. Thanks Doug.

Hey Trackloader, what so you think of this one.
Moving the new A sticks to Juskatla, one truck forward and one truck in reverse, all the way from Br 40 (I think, getting a little fuzzy with time)

Do you have a picture of when Steve Katovic and Don Brier moved the sticks from The Victoria Park to South East Bay. When they decided to trade places they turned the trucks around so they didn't have to give up their own trucks.

Around 1986, there is a picture of them coming over Victoria bridge onto the White River Main at the pub in Sayward.

Alright, I can't stand it any longer. What's an A stick? They don't look quite wide enough to be used as spars, and they're too long for bridge stringers without supports.....

Come on now, don't leave me hanging...... :D

Outstanding shot, BTW.

A sticks or A Frame.

They were 2 large logs set up in an A shape used to lift the load of logs off the trucks.

The logs on the trucks that I posted were Sitka Spruce.
Spruce is not as strong as Douglas Fir so these logs were quite a bit larger then what would have been used further down the coast.

I should see if I can resize the picture and repost it so you can see it better.

Gotcha. Thanks. I have only been around one reload, and have never actually seen a log dump. I believe the reload I'm familiar with (been a lot of years) used four fairly short spars set in place, instead of an A frame. Loads went from off-highway trucks to rail cars.

So I have got out on another road trip and came across this old HDX, there was some guys working on an old HD and ask them about it, said it had the Rolls Royce engine at frist but swapped a 12-71 in. the RR engine must have been longer as there is alot of space between the rad and eng. Also still has a two speed aux. trans in it.
s/n 9031960. so would this be 1959? has old style doors and some cool looking gauge face's. Fill us in HDX:)

Greatwestcam That is one of two of the original "The Arctic Trucking" units left that we have been able to find. This was the first truck built for them #1 of a 6Truck order Serial numbers were 9031960-9031965 and the 36 ton trailers were 9031966-9031971. Delivered May 59 These trucks came with inline 8 cyl Rolls Royce engines (C8SFL) thus the longer than normal hood The main trans was an R1160 Fuller with a 2B92 Fuller aux and the big Thompson Driveline retarder 46-40 Diffs with 10:16 Ratio 13 foot bunks with Seattle Stakes Trucks were painted Pasture Yellow. We have been talking to the owner of the one over this way on the Island here and trying to talk him into bringing it to the 90th Anniversary show here this summer.Although it is unrestored and in need of some work the owner said he will try and find some time to at least get her running and maybe low bed her up That one is #3 I think and she has a 6-110 GM engine. It was said that none of the original RR engines survived and were all replaced over time. We can only hope that maybe some one will find something of the other 4 trucks

HDX: Based on what you are saying about a longer than usual hood for a Rolls Royce engine, would you say the truck in post #877 probably had a Rolls Royce engine? That hood looks LONG.
