Old Case 580 CK won't shift into reverse

I bought a 1967 gas 580 CK with mechanical shuttle. I knew it had shift problems when I bought it but it would go into reverse. It sat for a few years and I've started to work on it now. It won't shift into reverse. The gears start to grind when moving the lever. It will shift into forward. I...

580CK Air cleaner oil bath style replacement

My 1967 580CK was missing the air filter. I found a late 60's filter but it was from a diesel. I thought they must be the same but the diesel is a little bigger than the gas. I had to open up the cutout in the hood just a bit to fit the bigger housing. The oil cup also had some pin holes in it...

580 ck could shuttle pops out

I was just in my 1967 580 CK. You'll have to pull the shuttle cover to have a look-see. Mine is the mechanical shuttle. It sounds like it could be worn shaft detents. In the picture, it's circled in white. You can see a couple of the detents, (grooves). There's not much on my tractor that...

Early Case 580 CK Shuttle help

First thing, can anyone tell me how long the mechanical shuttle dip stick is? I need the total length from the bottom of the cap, and the length to the full mark. Next, is there a way to put the shuttle cover back on easily? I tried for an hour, then got mad and disassembled the steering tower...

    hydraulic cylinders

I just rebuilt my 580 CK earlier this year. It was the first time I had ever done it so this is from the perspective of a first timer. The two problems I see will be needing a gland nut wrench, and the parts are really put together with a lot of ft. lbs. My tractor had a gland nut wrench tucked...

    What is your favorite model?

Here's a well loved Cat D7 my father brought home from a trade show in the 1950's.

    Case 580 CK mechanical shuttle

The brass part is broken into 3 equal parts. The teeth on forward synchronizer are looking a little tender also. But forward still works.

    Case 580 CK mechanical shuttle

My 580 CK with a mechanical shuttle will move forward but in reverse when the clutch is let out there is a grinding of gears. I pulled the cover off and this is what I found. I think the damaged part is the reverse synchronizer. Is this much of a job to replace, other than having to split...

    Case 580CK oil questions

Is there such a thing as cheap hydraulic oil? :) I have to chuckle as I've read other posts and seen pictures of other tractors. Most of them are painted nicely and are neat and tidy. I'm not kidding as you can tell from my pictures that there are not a lot of areas on my tractor that have not...

    Case 580CK oil questions

Thanks for the help gg and Phil. Here are a couple of pictures. One of my problems is I'm new to larger machines, (this is larger than my Ford 8N). So I'm not sure if I have a torque converter, or power shuttle. There is no external filter for the shuttle oil I see. None in front of the...

    Case 580CK oil questions

I've got a 1967 Case 580 CK that is pretty well used. I'm changing the oil in the drive line and need some basic answers. I've got a service manual for it but can't find what I need. There are 3 oil fill holes on the drive line. One in the very back over the differential. Does it want 90W gear...

    Case 580-water in hydraulic oil

The pump seems OK. The water does separate out of the oil. When I pulled the drain plugs on the loader arms nothing came out and I could feel ice up in the hole. I put a kerosene torpedo heater on it for a while and they thawed and the oil drained. I haven't pulled the cylinders yet but so far I...

    Case 580-water in hydraulic oil

The more I thought about it the more I didn't like it so I pulled the pump out today and it's inside now. I'll pull the cylinders too and the water hopefully won't be a problem.

    Case 580-water in hydraulic oil

Hello, I recently bought a 1967 Case 580. It needs a lot of work but I like tinkering on it so I don't mind. I'll have a lot of questions in the coming months and you guys seem pretty knowledgeable so I hope you don't mind a bunch of brain picking. A few of the hydraulic cylinders are...

    Welcome!!!

Ruffasacob Hello, I just purchased a 1969 Case 580 TLB and was searching for information and found this site. I'm used to smaller farm tractors, Farmall A and Regular, Ford 8n, Fordson F, but this is my first Industrial style machine. It's just for home use and my user name describes the Case...
