Cat D8K sold high

I looked at a D8K that had cab and air and was in good shape the day before the Ritchie Bros Sept. Auction in Kansas City.
I really like my D9G. But a cab would be nice. the 8 would be easier to move, and I mistakenly thought it might go cheap.
The tractor had a nice interior, looked good on the outside, good undercarriage and had $60,000 worth of work done on motor and trans in the last year.
Should of stayed home auction day.
It sold for $220,000.

they usually bring 40-50,000 around here at auction in avg shape. For 220,000 it would have to have a cat certified rebuild for me to be interested. We run two 8k's and I am looking for a third, for that kind of money I could buy a good 8R

Sounds like a bidding frenzy went out of control. I can't imagine even a really nice K going for half that much here.

I think the exchange rate may have had something to do with it. Think it went to the UK.
That is still dang high.
I was going to go 40k on it and figured I wouldn't get it bought, but didn't want to miss it if it did go for that.
As far as I know things aren't higher here in general.

I was checking their website out and what was coming up at their auction and saw the D8K you are talking about.It was cleaned and painted and undercarriage looked very good,but had no idea that it would even come close to selling for that.

The way it looked i thought it would sell good,because of its condition,but not that good.I figured maybe in the high 60's range.

What did the D6R's bring and some of the other equipment ? Did the other machines sell good also?:usa

The other equipment seemed reasonable.
One contractor had brought in 50 or so pieces and they were all very well kept.
A rops canopy D8N sold right ahead of the 8K and it went for 80,000, which seemed about right.
There was another D8K there that was a scraper pusher. No blade or hydraulics and it went for 100,000.
Other than the two D8K's things sold a bit high, but a lot of the equipment was in above average condition.

I hope the people in marketing at Caterpillar, where there to witness people willing to grab up almost 30 year old tractors for such high prices. So why would someone spend that kinda dough on an old D8K when they could buy a fairly newer D8R?

Maybe Bill or Paul are collecting old Cats now.

One of the local contractors had a D8K at RB auction 3 months ago the machine sold dirt cheap. It sold far cheaper than the owner was asking for it as a private sale. The old Cat was in fairly good shape they just didn't use it anymore. I think the machine was a 1969 but as I said it was in decent shape it sat for a few years.

When they updated the "PUSH" Cats to D9R's & other equipment a few years ago they had an auction


The 2 D8K's sold for $45k & $55k & that was w/ new undercarriage on both machines & new cutting edges on blades



$220k sounds like what someone else said ya could buy a CAT certified rebuild machine @ that cost sounds like 2 bidders wanted that machine BAD

Last Ritchie bros auction here a 98 hitachi ex750-5 with 5000hrs, new paint, and trust me this machine was a nice one , went for $70,000 cdn! What a deal, but on the contrary a 2006 d9t with 600 hrs i believe in Quebec went for $500k. That was an expensive d8k.

Around 1995/6 I attended an Auction (Don Fords, Stafford) with the orders to buy the " BLUE BOY " the last D8K sold, the first jobs to do on it was sort the heads and remove the engine to fix the usual knackerd engine mount (the one by the H/pump) we took the bidding upto £46,000 (I was told to buy it " WHAT EVER ") but my heart was pumping like an Elephants as I new it was way over the top cash-wise and it was sold????? for £46,500 to Biffa Waste, we bought the last D8K in the sale for a cracking price of £21,200 which I did a full rebuild to it, (most TAX efficient) I would love to know who paid this top price for a near 30 year old banger, if it was bought for the U.K. I can only think of 2 people that would have this sort of steam behind them to pay out big style

Hi all,
Stumbled on the forum after many internet searches on an unrelated topic. Had to register after reading the thread on the D8 K that sold high. I worked for the company here in Omaha, Ne that sold the D8 K at K.C. I was the hoe operator and heavy hauler for them for the last 3 yrs.

The machine was purchased in 2005 from a small grading company in Iowa. It was totally trashed. It had obviously worked in the aggregate quarries for a period of time and had a crude set of tree sweeps fabricated as it must of done some tree clearing. It was used sparingly in '05 and the spring of '06 when it was time for a complete rebuild.

The entire machine was disassembeld and rebuilt. The only thing on the track assemblies that were reused were the grousers, everything else was replaced or rebuilt. The hard nose, pans and hoods were replaced with salvaged items of remans. The factory cab was gutted and instead of redoing the factory a/c and new Red Dot unit was installed. Everything else was replaced or reconditioned. NMC completely went through the rearend and also provided the rebuilt transmission and engine. All assembly was handled by our one heavy equipment mechanic and one helper.

I don't know the exact amount, but I had heard that well over $100,000 was spent on the rebuild not including the original purchase price.

When the company decided to sell all of their grading equipment I hauled everything to K.C. The Ritchie Bros. reps. were impressed with the equipment, but never thought that it would go out of the ballpark.

I took a new position with another company 2 days before the auction. When I talked to the owner a couple of weeks later about how the auction went he told me how well the 2 D8's did. (They also owned the pushcat.) Nobody imagined they would do that well. There were some companies in town who were interested, knowing who had done the work, but none interested at those prices.
