Welcome to the HEF, Nelowboy1. Always glad to know there is another Nebraskan on board, and a fellow Omahan to boot.
I worked for Sanford And Sons, er, Negus and Sons, since 1992, up until last year. What contractor had these D8's?
It is still unknown if my old outfit is going to survive in any way, shape or form. Lots of rumors going around, all I know is the yard is full of iron and company pickups with the license plates removed....
Nice to hear somebody is still working around here, a lot of us aren't!
Again, welcome to the HEF.

New cat d7e

The first cat D7E made its way to my state the other day, and I was lucky enough to get about an hour on it. I am one of very few people around here to have been on one, which surprises me because I dont usually get to try the latest machines out until they have been around long enough to get worn out. I will say that it was different, but I wonder how well they will hold up over time. The undercarriage seems to be stout, wow! The grousers almost look too big to be on a 7, but for a new machine the tracks were very loud. The new cab design is nice, visibility is good, and it still feels like quality, it doesnt feel like a cheap plastic bubble like some of their other cabs. They put the seat in straight again, not at an angle like a lot of us are now used to, but it seems to work OK. The engine compartment has two angled panels that face the cab and reflect the sun right into your eyes. They should have painted those non reflective black, I was also not impressed with the control lever designs. They dont allow you to hold a lever like you would naturally, and I was not crazy about the directional switch, and it takes some getting used to running a dozer that has no decelerator. It had a lot of power, going in a straight line, plenty enough power to spin the tracks on a heavy push which surprised me. It was better than I expected for something that runs on electricity. Like I said before, I would like to see how it will hold up, I would like to run one that has a few thousand hours on it. I also think that they can make some improvements to it,mostly with the controls, maybe the next version of this machine will be better. I was wondering about weather or not there are any long term health risks from being near all of the electric components? Overall, I give it a 7 out of 10. Do any of you run one of these regularly? if so I would like to hear what you think so far.

Looks like the vendor was the winner in the D8K sale!
I only wish that equipment was priced as good here in Australia as it is in the States. For example, the following prices came from a local website www.constructionhub.com.au
D4D $30 - $40k
D4E $50 - $60k
D6C $30 - $50k
D6D $60 - $90k
D7G $80 - $100k
D8K $100 - $140k
Even D4 7Us with a blade fitted are going for about $15,000 in good condition. These are $Au prices and at present our dollar is about $0.92US so there is still a big difference in prices. I gusee it gets down to availability and demand.

Hi Aussie John
Thanks for posting that. Is always interesting to know machinery prices on the other side of our ditch.
Machinery prices are pretty cheap here, was a auction in auckland recently where a real tidy 140hp D6C sold for 37k. Went to pacific islands and a tidy 1982 ps D4E sold for 25k. These are our dollars which is a hell of alot less AUD. 1 kiwi peso gets .76 Au $ So is some good buys here at present but shipping may be another question. Although i did hear of someone in SA shipping a Allis HD6EP over from here.
Cheers Merv :drinkup

I seen a pair from S.A. in MD Sale go in to office and say they were not bidding in US$ and try to renegotiate. Ritchie put back in sale later and it went much lower.

They get beat when they return home

Has anyone ever heard of a problem with CAT D8k's sucking an intake valve? I have a friend who has sucked down two intake valves in 800 hours. This last time he put on brand new CAT heads with all new CAT parts. The mechanic told him that D8k's were good for that? I have an 8K and I haven't had much trouble with it at all. Does anyone know about this?

Hi,

Iron Planet has a listing for an ex-navy D8K with ripper, just over 2000 hrs. It looks in real good shape-be interesting to see what it brings.

I looked at that D8k and it looks pretty clean for what it its. I have seen a few military tractors and that one doesnt look like a military version. First I dont see any green paint. I realize that it has been painted over but in the scratches you should be able to see a little green paint. All those Navy tractors were painted green. I have a friend who bought three of them and all the parts are green. Most of them were close to the ocean and have a lot of corosion on the belly pans. Second the hour meter is not the original. Its been replaced and there is no way to tell the actual hours. That ripper that they are including is probably off of a D8h. Most of the D8ks had a four barrel ripper. I have seen a few with the two barrel rippers but they are few and far in between out here. If it were going through auction in California it would be lucky to bring over 30k
