Would help if you mentioned the make and model, and included something to give idea of size.
That said I'm guessing it was in the bottom tank and has lines connected to it on the outside of tank. I would be thinking it's an oil cooler. Hydraulic or transmission oil??? Could even be engine oil, but most engine oil coolers are part of the engine.

I agree with kshansen, it's a cooler that mounts in the lower tank of the rad, oil/trans/hyd cooling.
