Water Transportation

The fallers cut the timber, then the loggers yard it to the road and load it onto trucks. The trucks often haul it to the water, where it is dumped in, then sorted by species and grade by little boom boats. Then finally it is barged or rafted to the mill- simply because 2 or 3 men can haul the equivalent of hundreds of truckloads, and all in one tow.

The clearcuts do look horrible-- but with the rain and mild climate in 5 or so years they are completely green, and in 30 to 40 years are being looged again. Much of what is being logged now is actually 3rd growth.

I was hesitant to post the ariel shots, as many don't understand the quick turnaround. Timber truly is a crop, and it is amazing to watch it grow!

I think you have the information and photo archive available to you to publish a fine pictorial on northwest logging....I'm sure it would sell.
Anyway....carry on ! I always enjoy your posts and photo's.

Do you have any info on the Hayes and Pacific logging trucks? Perhaps a build or spec sheet? It looks like they used a Kenworth W900 cab. I'm just curious about horsepower,transmission ect. used in those rigs.

I can round up some literature, yes. These trucks were custom built and used many different cabs, Kenworth included. The Hayes and Pacifics were built right there in BC, per customer spec, and were hell for stout as hou can see. Alot of the trucks in this thread are Kenworth 850's- hugely popular in the Island. Also a few Mack CL350's- another monster logger built for BC. I'll see if I can scan some sales literature on these for you.
