Looks sort of like a heel boom for logging.
Just because someone stuck that on there, don't make it a good idea.
"Some folks should not be allowed to play with welders or hydraulics".

Could be for picking rocks, for construction and landscaping rather than agriculture most likely. If the jaws are slightly wide, then I'm guessing rocks. If they're pointy, I'm guessing it's for pulling logs out to deal with them another way. Not carrying them around with the boom, just grabbing and pulling back to sort, cut, or pile.

It could also be someone's bad idea that never worked, that could explain why such an old loader is still in pretty good shape.
