Yeah that would not have been a fun rollercoaster ride over the hill. No brown smudges in the seat though

She belongs to Sandy Grasseth and Sons there on the Nehalem River. He used to have a couple Skagit SJ-4's, a TMY-45, and some shovels around there too.

Great that you find some yarders on the beaches there too - great pic's Jeremy! The 255 cab looked bad, it's good to hear the accident was not fatal.

Thanks Torkel having fun down here relaxing, the timber industry seems to be still somewhat alive down here. Two logging sites within five miles of where I am staying and a constant parade of log and chip trucks going by. Yeah poor 255, not a pretty site to see. Good to see it will be working again sometime soon along with the operator!

Went for a drive after breakfast this morning. Here's the first Thunderbird loader I've ever seen in person. Found it at a log yard by The Dalles, Oregon. (across the river in Dallesport to be exact).Man, these things were built hell for stout!

Thunderbirds in Fort Bragg, CA

Last summer made a trip down to the Bay Area to visit family and made a detour thru Redwood Country, while going down I convinced the family to head thru Fort Bragg and make a brief stop at Anderson Logging. No yarders in the yard but found three dandy ones at Roach Bros Logging right in front of the Anderson Yard.

Thanks for the update. I kind of wondered why three nice yarders would be sitting still during mid-summer of last year. Still scratching my head why I.didn't get serial on the 255.

Thanks to Roadswitcher I can provide a bit of history to this machine.

"Re TMY R5044 - Construction date, April 1987 - first owner, Jerry Van Damme (owned a number of T/birds), second owner, SP-Bud Eastman, California. It came to NZ in 1997 to Bill Kissal in Greymouth (I helped set it up, rained the whole time). I then heard rumours that it went to Nig Bryant in Nelson about eight years ago."

Recently the machine was purchased by Speirs logging after it had sat for quite some time at Meed Engineering. It had been reposesed. Speirs are taking good care of the machine and it is currently operating in the southern Wairarapa.

The majority of the forest over here is radiata pine. We try to log it at about 30 years of age. Depending on the growing conditions the average tree will weight 2.5 tonne, this is about 0.6m through the butt and 30m tall. Some areas are short of contractors so the trees are getting a bit bigger. 3.5 tonne average piece size forests are around but anything bigger is not common.

Our big yarders down here generally pull more trees per turn not bigger wood
