Shipping of R80 rough terrain forklift

Can a Eagle Picher R80 Rough Terrain Forklift be transported 800 miles with the mast fully tipped forward. The transport company I have contracted with said the 132.5" mast was too tall for their equipment to go under the 14' limit on freeway I-5. I assumed that the mast could be tipped forward the full 45 degrees as stated in the published specifications and transported that way. The company apparently did not try to tilt the mast and just said the upright mast was too tall. The Eagle Picher R80 forklift is the same as the Cat R80 and the R80 is currently being manufactured by Noble. I am deaf so I have sent emails but have not received a response from the company.

Thank you for the comments. I used VeriTread to solicit bids on the move. I don't remember the name of the outfit, but they use "hot shot" trailer transport. it was the low bidder - which may have something to do with the problems.... I am not sure what you mean by "put the rear wheels up on back wheels of the trailer". I had thought that the weight center of the forklift should be pretty much just forward of the center line between the two axles. I have contacted the Richie Brothers auction yard three times asking them to have someone tilt the mast forward and measure the effective height, but I have yet to hear back from them. The weight of the R80 4x4 is listed as 16000lbs, so I assume that should not be an issue.

Catman is talking about hauling on a removable gooseneck type semi trailer. There is enough weight capacity in this case it doesn't matter where the lift is positioned. I think you are trying to get it hauled by a hot shotter 'cause its cheaper, but the FL will be on a trailer deck that is over the axles, making the load to tall.

I'm guessing you will have to get out your big boy wallet and hire a real trailer.

Find one listed for sale at a dealer, call the dealer and ask them to tilt it forward and measure the height.

I have a Allis 706D which is a similar forklift and can haul it on a beavertail deck over gooseneck, but we generally haul it on a full tractor trailer. Its pretty top heavy and hauls like a pig on the gooseneck. We tilt the mast all the way forward and raise it a little and its just under height.

Some of the hot shot guys don't have a beavertail and short ramps, and that's probably not going to work, approach angle will be too steep. If you have to put it on a gooseneck you'll need one with beavertail and good ramps.

Have you contacted trucking companies directly, rather than use a loadboard?

Loadboard you're going to get everyone with a flatbed bidding on it. We always contact the trucking company directly any time we need a machine moved. Only about 2 companies we use to haul our stuff too as they've proven they get the job done right consistently.

Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I am trying to avoid the several extra thousands of dollars for a low boy and get the R80 hauled by a hot shot trailer. If I get it up here, I plan to haul it on my 24K equipment trailer which has a deck height of 30 inches. My calculation is that with the mast fully tilted, the total height of the trailer and the R80 should be under 12 feet. Am I wrong? If I can't haul it this way, I will just have to resell the forklift and something with a lower mast height, which I looked for but didn't find.

Yeah, I was amazed at the number of responses I got from the listing on VeriTread along with the range of prices - from $2,000 to $4600. I did not see any listing of the types of equipment to be used by the various bidders. I had used a shipping company for several other pieces of equipment and tried them first, but got no response, the guy is probably retired. The company that was asking $1925 for shipping on the hot-shot trailer is asking $3845 for the use of a low boy. If you can recommend a transport company that can beat that, I would be interested.

if you are not in a hurry, they can do it as a back haul and save you some money, because of diesel prices they dont like to drive empty... i have used them both on back hauls
