Museum 009, Going Up!!

Towering up for the first time in 20+ years. Scary! This machine was built in 1969 for Crown Zed, and is the only 009 I've ever seen with the cab over the engine. Also notice that the tower is made from flat sections, not spiral wound. The old beast held together, even though the engine started puking oil halfway up, and we temporarily lost hydraulics a few degrees from completion.

This is awesome. I have never seen the cab mounted there either- the operator wanted to see his drums better no doubt, and obviously got someone to go along with him on it. May even be a factory mod, who knows.

It WAS factory. I have the parts book, and it's noted in the front "cab over engine, enlarged main gear, 500 gallon water tank with hydraulic fire pump" There are also factory drawings showing the cab platform.

Old M&B Spar on Hayes HDX Truck Mount

Built in the M&B Queen Charlotte Division shop, the "S" series Madill spar was taken from an old tank mount machine, and the yarder is a Tyee Machinery Works K-166.

Madill 009 on Rubber Mount

These were no good, couldn't climb even small hills without a pull. The two that they used here were sent South after they ran out of flat ground.

Madill 026 Dump Machine

Mounted on a sled, the dump machine version of the 009 yarder. Only about a dozen built, from what I understand.

We have 3 of them here in Alaska today, close to my home and owned by a friend of mine. 'Hoists' only now, the A-Frames (steel, and also Madill-built) were sent to the scrapper long ago I'm afaraid. I may have some old pics of those here someplace.....

Last Shot of Our 009 In the Saddle

Last picture taken before towering up. It ended up M&B red, even though it was CZ orange originally. M&B donated the paint, so beggars can't be choosers.

Very Early Madill Spar

This is from the days when you sent your yarder and truck to Madill, and they built a steel spar with your equipment. Notice the saddlebag tanks for fuel. These early spars were not entirely successful, since they had a tendency to break in half behind the cab. The raising ram bore down right on the most stressed portion of the truck frame, and many of these old trucks had numerous patches on the frame. Some of the last spars built were on truck mounts, but they had hydraulic jacks installed directly below the ram. These took the weight of the pipe, instead of the truck frame.

What a great pic! What the heck is that beast of a shovel? I can't tell what it is, but its huge! Custom heel boom and camp-shop raised cab, no doubt.

Madill Dump Hoists, for A-Frame Log Dumps

Built just for this purpose, these were incredibly popular throughout Alaska. First 3 pics show A-Frame setup, last 2 show dump hoist today, on a trailer in Ketchikan.

A-frames

I am not sure but I got pictures of an A-frame located at Ker Point close to Port Alice. (2 pictures)It looks identical to picture from Alaska. Last picture shows an A-frame from Holberg - hoist located at old lowbed trailer. Great for modeling!

I suspect that whole getup is Madill-built. The hoist looks like a 009 for sure, with the cab at ground level though, and on the opposite side. Different, but very neat indeed!

That was a three yard Lima, operated by my Grandpa. The cab and heel boom were ordered in from somewhere down South, and installed in the Juskatla shop. They also installed an air system, and all the original controls remained in place, with air pots to work them. The steering wheel had a sprocket added, with a chain going to a new steering wheel upstairs. That machine served Kelley Logging for over 20 years, and it was old when they got it. It was originally used as a dragline, and scooped gravel out of the rivers to build the roads. Big Cat V8, I think a D-17000? That sound right?
