Is this done from time to time or was it someones hair brained idea?

It looks like it went really well!
I can remember as a kid a local tourist company did the same thing but off a flat deck truck. The truck was flatout at 60mph and the plane got off ok.

Actually easier to take off from the trailer than the lake, no drag or suction on the floats. Have been up in the bush before on small lake, perfectly calm day (sucks for fishing as well) pilot couldn't get enough lift to take off, asked if we could do zig zags with the boat to make enough chop to reduce water suction on pontoons or some technical crap like that. Two boats making waves and he cleared the trees, neither of us got run over.

Trip to Anchorage as a Kid, Uncle took us out to the Base Camp for Caribou Season on Tundra, was a "Lake" more like a Septic Pond near the camp where they had hauled in the "Truck" and materials to build the Dirt Floor accommodations and Meat Shack on Stilts. We were to Clean up then the Pilot that took us out would return after few days take us back to Anchorage.

Long Story Short, his PREVIOUS Aircraft 5 passenger single engine on floats would have had little trouble to bring us out had engine issues so he ended up with a WACO on Floats with a HUGE Radial on the Nose. Close to DOUBLE in Size and weight where managed to Land where was near to a Full Stall yet used near All the Water to get slowed to turn and come back to shallow end. Gathered our Stuff, he was counting Ounces, had us leave some shovels and larger hand tools had brought up, engine was left idling to Use Up FUEL for launch weight. When we went to take off water was SMOOTH Slick so he motored out and proceeded to Zig and Zag to get any form of Waves on surface then almost dragged pontoons at shallow end to launch. Had Prop at Hard Full Pitch, Engine at Max throttle and as much flaps as could dial in, we could hear brush against pontoons as left the Lake. Uncle later stated was sweating PROFUSELY as we took off.

So Fun Morning, Rains on, Cousin did use the Goose for his Fence Posts and thanked me where asked if I could come get it as he was having to haul wife to Son's house, Sick grandbaby.

Went over got the goose and came back, fueled the Ford and as fueled Guy in a F150 dragging a 35? ft Fifth Wheel rolled up to gas pumps, whining all the time Bad Gas Mileage, No Power on little Hills, worried of rain to get home as trailer pushed a LOT. New Brinkley.

Looked across pumps at me asked what I was looking at!! NO Hesitation, stated A Half Ton where a Ton is nearly not big enough. he Scoffed, then blurted Sales Gal at Camping World said would be Fine, Just fine, and scoffed again. Needless to say I poked the Bear, asked if ever read his owner manual on towing capacity, or bothered to look at Door Label. Another Scoff pfffft. His Wife/Gal Friend/Passenger yelled he was too stupid to check. Folded her arms across chest and stared forward.

I Finished fuel up and LEFT.
Looked up a 3515 Brinkley, 14,000lb DRY Empty, pin weight near to 2600. Ford appeared as Later 2020s by Styling, nearer to new, so looked up ratings. No Idea what engine or trans or gearing or if even had tow package where Max could have ever been he was two Ton OVER GCVWR, and at least a thousand over Bed Cargo Capacity.

What is with the Morons?????

At a rest stop on I89 in New Hampshire, me pulling a 6500 LB tow behind with a GMC 2500 with 6 litre, & 4:11 gearing feeling barely adequate. An F150 went flying down the hill at 80 MPH towing a 35 foot fifth wheel. Newish F150s do have twin turbos ?3.5? litre. They do a lot, but I have to think short engine, transmission, brake, differential life.

"Yabutt...the trailer has electric brakes..."

Yes....however:
1. You still to steer it (tail waggin' the dog ^^^ is spot on)
2. and your whole life hangs in the balance over qty (1) piece
of #12 ga. wire at the trailer brake connector.

"Yabutt it's got a breakaway brake box"

Yes:
1. and you'll want the trailer to depart from the truck at the moment
your screaming down the hill with no brakes, as that's the only way that
system works.
Maybe rig some baler twine from the breakaway switch thru the back winder
of the truck ?

;)

Wife and I have a 34' travel trailer that is probably pushing 10K lbs with all the **** she has crammed in it.

I would rather pull a skid or a mini on my 15K lb pan trailer all day and any day of the week rather than that rolling billboard. Refuse to pull the RV on the Interstates due to the vacuum 18 wheelers make when they pass - pushes my F350 all over the road that weighs around 10K with all my **** crammed in it.

Saw a trailer similar to ours behind a Tundra hauling ass down the hwy the other day, nose way in the air - sent a chill down my spine.

Problem is a suit that has never pulled more than a lawn mower trailer behind his SUV reads the above info on the Ford F150, buys a 30' plus camper trailer, packs another 2500 LBs of crap in it then sets off at 75 MPH down the highway. Next thing you know this rig is piled upside down in the HWY median.

Half ton ads it's a double dog dare of stupid .90s 6 wheel 1ton iron block was 12k View attachment 363028View attachment 363029
Number two son lives 70 miles from me. He had my IH 385 utility tractor with loader & scraper blade. I'll estimate 6000 LBS on a ?1900? LB trailer, about 8000. He drove it one way, I retrieved it a few weeks later. It struggled a bit up a 12% grade, (it had to be geared down). Otherwise it behaved fine.
His is 3.5 litre with twin turbos.

Years back, I had a 2001 GMC 2500 van 5.7 litre with Quigley 4x4 conversion. they lift them 4" rear and 3" front for looks & oil pan clearance.
Bought my first camper trailer 6000 LB GVWR. Salesman assured me I wouldn't need any special towing equipment. First 1000 mile round trip, I couldn't stand it! I had already bought a load equalizing hitch, but tail wagging was awful! I spotted a small sign on the lawn of a small house: TRAILER HITCHES SOLD & INSTALLED. I turned around. An hour later, I had a sway control installed & my sway problem was solved!

Good time with my dad we drove close to 400mile ea way to buy a Cat D2 dozer hauled it home on a u-haul car trailer & 1500 5.9 v8 no issues pulling low weight vs a 40' 6 ton billboard under a half ton see the bed & cab flexing going down road on razor edge of failure like CM said his 1 ton had trouble holding it lane.
