Made a deal on Big 40

The trailer shop that bought my tandem dually trailer had an older Miller Big 40 welder they haven't used for 3 or 4 years. I was talking with the owner and he wants to clean up the yard and get rid of stuff he doesn't need or use. He jokingly said I could get the welder and trailer for $100. I said I need to make sure it turns over. I bought a new ignition switch because they had lost the key. The gas tank was bone dry. I brought some gas and Seafoam but first wanted to drain the carb. I was expecting a bunch of old gas and sludge to come out but it was also bone dry. I put a little gas in and let it run out the carb. Then I put the drain bolt back in and hooked up my lithium booster. Amazingly the engine fired right away and was running in about 10 seconds! I figured it must have been run out of gas the last time it was used. The owner was away last week so I went to see him today. I asked what he would take for the welder and trailer and agreed on $500. I think I'll keep the trailer for my SA200 so it's easy to move around if I need to. I'm going to clean up the Big 40 and get a new battery for it. I think I should be able to get $1500 minimum and possibly over $2000 for it if I get some cables for it. It seemed like too good of a deal to pass up. I could sell the Lincoln for more but it's got a nicer arc. The Miller is still a very good welder though. The trailer isn't a cheap slapped together trailer either. Here's some pics.

A Big 40 puts out up to 400 amps (100% duty cycle at 300 amps) so would be OK for some gouging. Much better for gouging than an SA200 (200 amps at 60% duty cycle but at 40 volts so it's underrated). SA200's, especially the round barrel or older short hoods can bring good money even in non running condition. Running and operating can bring $2-$3000 and restored and professionally painted can bring $6500 or more.
