Occupation
Self employed bulldozing contractor with a D6D D4E
Later D4D with wet brakes was a common upgrade done by New Zealand Cat dealer to new machines in the 1970s. Initially this done by dealer branchs, until later one when it became a optional factory instalation on japanese built 47H and 65J model D4D.
All the later 65J DD and 47H PS models that came to nz had oil steering clutchs and brakes standard; and were a absolute vast improvement over dry models
Afaik wet brake option wasn,t offered on any other factory built D4D anywhere.
We owned D4D 83J2556 but know it was modified by Goughs the nz dealer at delivery.
Is a major modification. Yes brakes are totally different; double wrap bands with wet brake lining. Steering clutchs totally different bronze plates and heavier springs. Double pinion seals, and different bevel gear cover just some of the things i remember about them. I worked for NZ cat dealer at the time as a mechanic in 70s and 80s, and certainly knew my way around D4D.
